HARTFORD, CT - It is only the second week of Free Agency, but the Grizzlies have already made several substantial moves. As Free Agency opened, many were shocked to see the Grizzlies sign G Lowell Stubblefield (who was expected to remain with the Spirit) to a 4 year $15.63 million deal. That was followed by S Steve Frausto signing a 3 year $4.16 million deal.
In addition to the FA signings, three major trades were initiated. First, the Grizzlies sent their 2007 4th round draft pick and their 2008 2nd round pick to Tulsa for WR Ed Gaylor. Next, in a surprising move, Grizzlies management shipped off QB Deron Markel to Houston in exchange for former 1st round pick RT Charles Overton. Finally, their 1st round pick in this year's draft was sent to the Matadors in exchange for WR Ferreira and pick 2.9 in this year's draft.
GM John Richert had this to say regarding the moves:
We feel these moves immediately make us a player in determining
who is going to win the AC East crown this year. We have upgraded
our offensive line, our receiving corps, and our secondary. We're not
even done with our moves yet, and I think we have added at least 2
wins to last season's total.
The Grizzlies are reportedly seeking help at TE, CB, and depth along the defensive front line. Given their cap situation for next year, the Grizzlies could be a team to be reckoned with for the next 3-4 years.
