Mules say goodbye to Chuck Oliveria and Milton Martin.
Drafted in 16th spot of round 2 in 2005 to bookend Grunt Cox at DE. The natural DT was having a fantastic rookie season notching 4.5 Sacks in 10 games. Then Chuck suffered an injury that ended his rookie season prematurely. The Mules moved Oliveria back to DT in 2006 but he was not activated for any games. Although Chucks agent Horace Flynn has not advised him to retire his days as a Mule are over for now.
Milton Martin was almost not a Mule as his name was transposed by the original Mule LS during the IFL dispersal draft. When the Mules announced their selection of Martin Milton in the 6th round of the dispersl draft it left all those in attendance confused. Luckily for the Mules the IFL commissioner Cringer caught the Mules typo and Milton Martin's highly successfuly first two injury free seasons were began. Martin had 14 picks with two TD in 2003/4 being named All IFL first team both seasons. 2005 was more of the same as Milton had 4 picks in 10 games before an injury ended his season. Although Milton rehabbed and was able to get back onto the field for the Mules in 2006 there is a youth movement in Murfreesboro and the Mules are only keeping one 11 year veteran DB and that is CB mentor Roger Longoria. Martin has not retired though as Ellis Bowlware is working tirelessly for Milton.
Mules FO welcome new staff members LS Ronald Alvarado, OC Joey Bauer and new HC Ethan Vera. Bauer is a seasoned IFL OC recently completing a three year stay with Reno that included a PO appearance. Vera is a rookie HC in the IFL - the only rookie HC in the IFL this season. But Vera is no rookie to IFL action as he spent 2005 as the Viper OC and 2006 as OC for the Matadores. Both teams were PO teams.
Well the Mules sanctions from 2004 offseason have finally cleared the CAP, but not without a ton of Mules being released and traded. At least 13 players including original Mule QB Manuel Willoughby (FA), standout MLB Dennis Gallup (Oak) and 2 time All IFL DT John Ash (Hou) have been released or traded. The Mules also dealt both the Spraggins in the IFL as FB Jimmy Spraggins was franchised and dealt to Houston and TE Soldier Spraggins was traded to the despised VooDoo. GM Kobeck had this to say about all the activity "The Mules tried to place Ash and the Spragginseses in the NFC, but the AFCS knows the quality of these players and they were willing to top all the other offers. The Mules look forward to competing against these All IFL players in the future".
The Mules are finally in a CAP position to maneuver and draft based mostly on talent and less on CAP considerations. The Mules currently have 35 players under contract and have cleared the CAP space to sign the 10 2007 draft picks. The Mules have 3 of the top 37 draft picks in this years draft. The Mules also have 14 draft picks in 2008 and 11 draft picks in 2009. These next 3 drafts will be critical for the Mules to compete with the elite IFL teams.
