Houston - The Houston Renegades fired coach Dominic Hamrahi just one season after he was signed. Disappointed by the amount of penalties the Renegades dealt with last season, and also some extremely questionable decisions in the running game, where he would often go with backup running back Mercury Buckner at odd times, including some games where it appeared he would give up the game earlier than expected, and just sit Timmerman on the bench. There were whispers, or in some case loud barks after some games coming from the Front Office where Timmerman would be sitting on the bench in close games, while Bucker got the carries.
It was often rumored that there were some personality conflicts between Timmerman and Hamrahi, or Timmerman and the team in general, but it appears from this release, GM GM Steve Beans decided Hamrahi was the one at fault.
Hamrahi was swiftly replaced by 2nd year coach Kris Ludwig. This was a questionable replacement, but Beans stated he has full confidence in him as a head coach, and should lead the Renegades to improvement next year even with Jerry StClair scheduled to be back sometime late in the season.
Ludwig quickly axed scout Luther Ostrowski and replaced him with Ralph Jeffcoat, who has strengths in all areas except running backs, and defensive linemen. With Timmerman locked in for many more seasons however, Ludwig wasn't concerned with that. He was slightly concerned about the defensive linemen situation, especially in an off-season where he'd like to improve on that line, but he said he's still confident of his abilities.
An offer was made to re-sign defensive coordinator, J.R Hummel who put the Renegades defense in the top 10 despite nagging injuries to players most of the season, but Anchorage was able to beat out the Renegades offer. The defensive line coach Leonard Suszkowski was promoted to take over that role. He showed his ability last season in helping Hummel despite the relatively weak line, including a rookie end.
Also released was offensive coordinator Dennis Schulz who contributed with some of the questionable running calls through the season. He was replaced by 4th year coach William Keen, who has an excellent track record with Wide Receivers, and is pretty good with the rest of the offense.
