Norfolk - The Houston Renegades finished up their weekend in Norfolk after a huge road win in St.Louis. This time they had to face the AC East leading Norfolk Vipers lead by Harold 'Fingers' Lozier who is having a great year with a 97.1 QB rating. For the second straight week, they had to do it in front of 70,000+ wild fans which can be intimidating on such a young team.
Timmerman was banged up on the opening kick off and took himself out of the game after his first run to sit out the rest of the quarter. Norfolk came out of the gate strong and scored 17 points on their first three drives. With the return of Timmerman in the 2nd quarter and a more aggressive passing attack by StClair, the Renegades showed a lot of heart by controlling the clock and getting at least one first down on each set of downs for the remainder of the game except for the key fumble by StClair in the third quarter which gave the Vipers great field position which they scored another TD.
The Renegades defense stepped up strong after that and completely shut down the Vipers allowing the Renegades to claw their way back to a 24-23 score, getting the ball back on their own 11 with 2 mins to go. StClair hooked up with Jones and rookie Kinder who had a huge game (109 yards) for 79 yards bringing them all the way to the Norfolk 31 yard line. The crowd intimidation was just too strong for rookie kicker Whiting however, as he missed a 48 yard FG attempt wide left which would have given them a 26-24 win.
In the loss however, Houston did move to first place due to a Louisiana loss to StLouis, and with two games to go against the VooDoo, and the tie breaker over the Cards, the Renegades have a decent shot at making a push at the division this year.
