Game of the Week
CBA(-1) @ VER
JC is out again this week. VER is 3-1 in this young season, and has looked to be one of the early favorites. VER will win with Virgil. Virgil is one of the truly great young QBs in the Imperial league.
FRE(-13) @ IWC
My how the mighty have fallen. FRE is off to a quick start behind the legs of rising young star, Bucky Beaver. Beamer should watch Beaver closely to see how well he shreds up the Snipe Hunters defense. FRE will win this game, but by 13 points? Vic says Hell NO. IWC will cover the 13 points.
NWK @ LRK(-12)
Another huge spread! LRK is the best team in the league. NWK is struggling without Alan Crespo. The question remains as to whether Crespo will play this week. I still think the Bulldogs find a way to cover the 12pts. They historically have a decent defense, and it should hold them within 12.
LAW(-4) @ TEX
I've got a little trend this week of picking NFC East teams. It continues again with LAW ready to pummel TEX. I love the Phantoms. This is my new favorite team. Look for the Phantoms to win, and win BIG
Vic's Top 5 Teams
1.Little Rock Toads
2.Salt Lake City Stallions
3.Vermont Mountaineers
4.Norfolk Vipers
5.Columbia Fire
LRK is again crowned as my top team in the league. SLC is a very close 2nd. They've been playing tremendous football as of late. NOR is the first AFC team to crack the top 5
I recently flew to Newark to have a chat with one of the original GM's, Matt. Here are some of the highlights
1. The Bulldogs are the best team, record wise, to not make the playoffs. Is this the year?
I hope so, but I'm an optimistic guy. We've had some teams in the past that were solid on defense, this year we have the players on offense. It's going to be tough to make it in the NFC. Our division is so good, we're almost forced to win the division then hope for a wildcard. The 2 losses in a row really hurt us. We need to get Alan Crespo healthy before we even talk about the playoffs. He is the centerpiece of the offense.
2. How good is Alan Crespo?
He is unbelievable. So much of what we do, and want to do, revolves around him. We think his fumbling problem is under control now. This fixes his glaring problem from his rookie campaign. With Alan running well, we should be able to utilize the passing game. This is where Andrew Robey, Walter Walker, and Reuben Caffrey come into play. They are all pretty good WR's. Our TE's are pretty good also. Peltier will continue to improve and be one of the best in the league.
3. Can you beat the Toads this weekend?
It is going to be a tough game, to be sure. Alan is another gametime decision. If he can't go, we've got faith in Colin Blain to get the job done. Little Rock is probably the best team in the league. Our defense has to step it up and take control of this game. To say they've played poorly is a bit of an understatement. This is a big opportunity for them to gain some respect back. The toads have a dynamic offense. They can beat you in so many ways. A win down in Little Rock will really help our playoff chances at the end of the year. It's going to be a great game, and I can only hope our guys are up for the challenge.
4. Who are some of your favorite players to watch?
James Tart, and the SLc Big 3. They are an impressive trio. I've tried to trade for Tart on a few occasions because I like him so much. Bucky Beaver is also one of my favorites. We were all set to draft him last year. Then the opportunity to trade with Lansing came up. I just couldn't turn down Alan. Bucky is really taking Fresno to the next step. He is a true game breaker. I'm very happy for his success.
5. What does this team need to make it to the next step?
I'd like to have an all pro offensive line. I mean a really tough group of guys that is renown as being the best in the game. I thought I was close to that last year, but Wayne Ostrowski has really lost a few steps. I'm still not comfortable with our current group. We also need some DE's. Since trading away Justin Jones, we haven't been able to find a solid replacement. This coupled with Casey Fowler's injury make us very weak at that position. I would also like to add a stud CB. Mack Aguire has been OK, but we could really use a stud there because there are so many great QB and WR tandems in our division. It really exposes our secondary.
6. Anything else you'd like to add?
Thanks for having me, Vic. It has been a pleasure.
Anytime
Until next time,
Vic
