The Grizzlies are pleased to announce their 2006 draft class:
1.9 WLB Courtney Cleeland
2.24 FS Dwight Jones
2.27 QB Deron Markel
3.13 CB Chuck Knight
3.19 RB Martin Baker
4.19 G Jerome Sales
5.9 TE Leroy Blassingame
7.9 LDT Thomas Hueffed
Courtney Cleeland has already made the move to SLB, where he is expected to be the opening day starter.
Second round pick Dwight Jones is expected to compete for the starting free safety spot.
After a surprising draft day trade involving former 2nd round pick Jerome Mueller, the Grizzlies selected Deron Markel to fill their backup QB spot. He enters training camp as the #2 QB, behind 2nd year QB Jim Hickman.
Third round pick Chuck Knight enters camp as the odds on favorite to start opposite Larry Seifert at CB. Team officials believe that despite starting two rookies, the secondary will be stronger than in 2005.
After addressing the secondary, the team drafted two players expected to improve the offensive line. Jerome Sales is expected to learn from James Brockaway and eventually replace him at LG.
TE Leroy Blassingame was taken in the 5th round to help the team run a two TE offense this year. However, the team is quiet about questions whether the offense will run this out of a two back or single back set.
Finally, Thomas Hueffed was brought in to add depth to the DT position. Early signs point to Hueffed and Markel having impressive training camps, as they have exceeded all expectations during the rookie mini-camp.
