The Deep Dive : Inside Whalers Football

    Iss #: 2
    Week 4, 2064
    Whalers Record: 2 - 1 (Tied 1st)

Week 4 Matchup: @ State College Stagz

Week 4 takes the Whalers to State College PA to take on the 1 - 2 Stagz. The Stagz come into the game looking to right the ship after a 28 - 20 loss to Raleigh. The offense is lead by duel threat QB Emmanuel Hamernik. Hamernik leads the team in both passing and rushing.

Hartford will be looking to find paydirt for the first time in the last 4 quarters of play, unable to do so in there 15 - 13 win over Los Angeles. Coming into this one with the 4th ranked rushing defense its clear the Whalers will continue to be a difficult squad to run against but will that be enough to get the win? This game will be a true test to see if this struggling offense can get on the right track before its to late.
    Week 4 Injury report

Hartford - C Alec Forbes, Broken Foot, Questionable

State College - LG Ryan Sanderson, Concussion, out
CB Curtis Corwin, Sprained Knee, Probable
    Week 3 Recap: Hartford 15 - Los Angeles 13
Game MVP: Jonah Alstatt (FG 5/5, LG 53)

In a game with very little offense to speak of, The Whalers edged out a win thanks to the foot of kicker Jonah Alstatt. Jonah was 5 for 5 on field goals scoring the only points for the team. The only touchdown scored in the game was a 2 yard run at the end of the first quarter by Los Angeles RB Miles Gerth. QB Phillip Hitchcock was 19/28 for 181 yards while the Los Angeles QB Alejandro Spoon was 24/44 with 237 yards and 1 interception. The defense was lead this week by OLB Broderick Copeland who recorded 8 tackles for the Whalers. In the end the 2 turnovers proved to be to much for Los Angeles to over come and they fall to 0 - 3.

    Player Spotlight: Jamie Facchini (WR)
Jamie Facchini played college football at North Carolina State. In 2056 he was drafted #1 overall to the Kansas City Owls. During his time at Kansas City his best season was his last with the team in 2059, putting up 638 yards and 6 touchdowns. Facchini would sign a $137.61 mil 5 year contract with the Los Angeles Matadors. Never putting up the numbers that Los Angeles paid him for the team parted ways with him. Now in his 9th season Facchini has found an opportunity with the Whalers. So far in 3 games he has brought in 8 catches with 49 yards and 1 touchdown. Its unclear if at this point Facchini will ever be able to live up to the #1 overall pick he was drafted to, but it would seem crucial that he preforms for Hartford as it could be his last stop on an IFL roster.

    Sit down with Coach Mandel

Every week here on The Deep Dive we will be sitting down with head coach Jameson Mandel to talk Whalers Football!

Deep Dive: Coach I am just going to get right into it. You came away with the win in week 3 but zero touchdowns...that has to have you concerned right?
Coach Mandel: Well you know winning is hard to do in the league so we will take it even though it was very ugly, but your right. We need to do better moving the ball and getting points on the board. We have a great kicker, but if we are relying on him to score all our points, we are not going to win many football games and thats no fault of his.

DD: Who are you looking for to have a big game this week on the offense?
CM: I think it always starts with the QB. Phillip has done protecting the ball which you want to see in a veteran QB, but I would love to see him step up and take control of this offense. Would also love to see the running game and Kaleb do there part. If we can setup that run game the pass will come.

DD: Are you confident in your offensive coordinator Duane Godfrey getting the most out of this offense?
CM: Duane and I looked at the game plan this week and I think we mad the necessary adjustments needed to get this offense producing and scoring points, but that has to translate to on the field.

DD: Lets flip over to the other side of the ball real quick. Your defense comes into the game ranked 4th overall against the rush. Is that the staple of this team and if so how do you maintain that?
CM: Its no mystery what this team is and is not good at right now. We stop the run and we will continue to disrupt that phase of the game for whoever lines up on the other side

DD: One last questions coach. Besides scoring on offense what does this team need to improve on to win this week in State College?
CM: Well we really need to put more pressure on the QB and get guys disrupting the pocket. We do that then it becomes very hard to have any type of success on this defensive unit.

DD: As always coach thanks for joining us and good luck this week.
    CM: My pleasure! Go Whalers!

That was Sit Down with Coach Mendel. If you have any questions for coach just respond with your questions in this thread and we will be sure to get answers for you!

Nice read! Appreciate the added content outside of watching my Solevision logs and checking other scores. Always makes it a bit more fun. Reminds me that I've been slacking hard on my (formerly) annual list of Top Draft Class Names, and also having these kind of check-ins and overviews from teams is fun stuff.

Maybe I'll make a ridiculous one with my coach roasting our players and everyone blaming everyone after an 0-3 start lol. Chaos in Vegas!

Glad everyone is enjoying it! Would be open to do a league wide thing but just not familiar with all the teams and everything just yet but in time who knows what my crazy brain will come up with
