STATE COLLEGE - It’s official, the Tommy Goble era in State College is about to begin. While optimism is high with Stagz fans, the season is still filled with enormous question marks one of which is the man brought in to “save the franchise” in Goble.
Goble has started the pre-season with a bang and has been extremely effective so far tossing 4 touchdowns on 320 yards passing all while avoiding any interceptions and keeping his completion percentage just a shade under 75%. This sounds like signs of a turnaround in Central PA, but with massive question marks at receiver, Goble could have trouble keeping that hot streak going into the regular season. Running back turned receiver Donnie Burns looks to be his most capable target this season with newcomer Jon Harvey expected to make a significant impact as well. 3rd round pick Raul Faust could make his presence known in 3 receiver sets as he was a solid slot receiver during his 4 years at the Air Force Academy. After that the receiver depth gets thin with two rookies who have been very disappointing in camp so far. Bryce Pound, the 6’7 280lbs monster out of Eastern New Mexico had a solid sophomore season for the Stagz pulling down 5 TDs on 60 catches and 648 yards. You can expect Pound will be expected to carry the load at tight end with Myles Wilson filling in on clutch 3rd downs. One thing is for certain, Goble will be earning that massive contract this season in State College.
Someone that Stagz fans hope will take some of the pressure off of Goble is another relative newcomer in Edgar Williams. His first season in State College was marred by injuries and bad offensive line play. All together it was an extremely disappointing performance for the former 2057 MVP, however that certainly didn’t stop State College ownership from giving him a massive payday in the offseason that will keep him in PA till he’s 33. Williams certainly has an explosive running style and could flourish with some massively improved quarterback play, but questions still remain about his performance last season and if it’s possible that his 1929 yard MVP campaign for the Killer Whales was just an aberration. With any luck free agent Jonah Gilley will fit in a LT nicely and allow Williams to do his thing.
