  • COLUMBIA REELING AFTER SECOND LOSS IN A ROW!!!

Atlanta Free Sports Press – Oliver Closeff
FIRE FALL TO THE POISON OF THE VIPERS 34-19

After losing Dallas Brockway for the season last week, the team came out determined to rebound from a crushing loss to Salt Lake. The only problem was that they were walking into the house of the #1 team in the IFL. It became obvious early that the rebuilt secondary was not ready for such an early test as Norfolk went up 24-0, thanks to 3 TD passes from Harold Lozier, in the first half. By then the game was all but over as the Columbia offense failed to ignite and eventually saw Jamie Morris replace starter Julian Cartagena at QB. In the end the Fire found themselves in the grips of a two game losing streak, with division leading Little Rock up next… Can the Fire recover?

COACHES UPBEAT AS STARTERS RETURN TO THE LINEUP……

With as much turmoil that the Fire have been facing during the second half of the season, there is actually some good news after losing two in a row. The news that four starters will be returning to the line up this week against the Toads as the push for the playoff’s begin. The best news is that three of these starters are on the defensive side of the ball with the returns of SLB Beau Brown, DT John Martinez, and most importantly of all SS Ronald Dukes to add some leadership to the depleted Fire secondary. “It is nice to get some guys healthy that understand what we are trying to do and understand our D, this is great news for the team!” Coach Merriman said after returning from the Norfolk game and talking with team trainers.

Also cleared to play this week was P Abel Medina who will now be able to free K Ty Fox to focus strictly on Field Goals and Kickoffs. “Hey I will do what the team needs me to do, that’s why I am here! But it is great to hear that Abel is ready to step back in and play.” Fox told reporters at the team’s post game press conference.

    CAN COLUMBIA MAKE THE PLAYOFFS???

This one will be hard to tell. As it stands right now, it is not looking good for the Fire. With the Toads in first place in the NFC South, the Fire find themselves tied with Vermont at 9-4 for the top wild card spot, but both Vermont and the Fire are hearing the knocking of three teams who are looking to make it into the playoffs as well. Vermont and Columbia have not meet on the field this year, but two teams knocking on the door, Salt Lake and Orlando, have both handed the Fire losses this year. Columbia is going to need to reach down deep as the final three games approach if they want to see the post season! A good way to start would be to beat the Toad’s this Sunday.
