1.3 – Shane Sweeney, QB Syracuse
Lansing goes with the heady Syracuse prospect to open what GM Vito Stallione is calling a New Terror in Lansing. Sweeney checks all the boxes and passes the eye test at 6’ 5” 227 pounds. Grade: A
2.3 – Marshall Terrell, WR, Stanford
After a solid choice at QB in Sweeney and legitimate threats at receiver in-house, Lansing makes a head-scratching pick for Marshall Terrell. He is a physical receiver with a limited route tree and atrocious hands. His physical gifts would give him the edge attacking from the slot and perhaps that is where he fits in this offense. Grade: C
2.30 – Rodney Covington, LB, Oregon State
The Ogres got themselves a starter opposite FA weakside linebacker Alex Jones. The fluid Rodney Covington plays the pass as well as he does the run. Look for him to make an immediate impact in their new 43 under look. Grade: A
3.2 – Quinn Gardner, DB, Maryland
Not sure what Lansing is going to do with this versatile back but his skillset could land him at SS or CB in Lansing’s new defensive scheme. Grade: C
3.3 – Maxwell Halvorson, TE, Michigan State
A trade of future draft capital for a mauler who might add some nasty to the running game? With a loaded TE room? With needs at linebacker and lots of playmakers at that position on the board? No no no Lansing -- no no no. Grade: F
3.30 – Herman O’Connell, DE, Fresno State
The 43-Under big end has arrived from central casting. Herman’s relentless motor and length should make the four big ends currently on the Ogres roster a little uncomfortable because he’s taking somebody’s job for sure! Grade: B
4.3 – Brent Norton, TE, Notre Dame
Notre Dame’s “Mister 3rd Down” takes his knack for getting a first down to a team that desperately needs it. With another pick at TE one has to wonder who will be exiting the tight end room post training camp, better value and maybe a better player than Halvorson. Grade: C
5.2 – Owen Tyworth, LB, Alabama
We suspect the Ogres are interested in this undersized thumper has a middle linebacker as he drops into coverage very smoothly --- a requirement for the Tampa-2 which should be employed a lot this season.
Grade: B
6.3 – Keegan Rubisch, LB, Utah
If you played linebacker for Lansing last season and hoped to be returning, let’s just say, things aren’t looking good for you. Rubisch adds yet another capable run and zone defender built for the 4-3. He can play either outside or inside. Grade: C
7.2 – Tyrell Browning, G, Temple
In a surprise move, the Ogres didn’t draft a linebacker with this pick. Instead, Temple starting left tackle has been drafted to compete for a position at guard. This is great value in the 7th round but cost the Ogres a chance at a potential playmaker in SS Hunter Sevcik.
Grade: B
Overall Grade: C+
In hindsight, I think I should have gone with more picks at linebacker when I took those tight ends
