What an unbelievable draft!
It was a truly amazing site at this year's Imperial Football League amatuer draft. I for one was kept extremely busy with all of the trades and transactions.
A few key transactions took place just prior to the draft where the top 4 picks changed hands.
Newark swapped their #4 pick with Lansing's #1.
Columbia gave up 3 1st rnders to move in where Texas was
Portland traded with Houston to fit in to #3.
These moves were all made for specific reasons, to attain superstar players. The top 3 guys in this year's draft have unbelievable talent and charasmatic personas. Offensively, you couldn't ask for a better player.
WIth the #1 overall selection, Newark wasted no time in selecting RB Alan Crespo. Crespo was the unanimous choice for the #1 overall selection based on Newark's need for a RB. Crespo should be a stud for many, many years.
The Columbia Fire suprised many by giving up so much for the opportunity to secure the best WR in the draft Mecury Halbert. Halbert and his 4.26 speed don't come along very often. Regardless of the cost to draft Halbert, this trade was no mistake. Halbert will stretch the field for the Fire and add another weapon for All Pro QB Julian Cartagena.
The Portland Seals slid in under the radar and stole the #3 overall selection from prospective suitors, striking a deal with Houston. Houston already has a All Pro caliber QB in Jerry Stclair and wasted no time in pulling the trigger to move their pick to Portland. Portland then selected QB Jay Caro. Caro may not have been the best QB in NCAA last season, but his skills show that he will make the best transition to the pros. He's raw with tons of talent. Caro will be a great QB in the future. The question remains as to who will start at QB for Portland. Is Portland willing to go through the struggles of a rookie QB? Only time will tell.
