After a Rock and Roll show offfseason, the Iowa City Snipe Hunters are now opening their training facility, John Wayne Hall, to the Press. Have to admit, I was a little excited. How often do you see a season where two superstars, Justin Jones and Chris Chaplin, join the team, only to completly and totally shun the press until after the draft.
And what a draft! Wide Receiver has been a big need for the Hunters since the inagural season in 2003. And with the trading of the only big name receiver last year which sent Andrew McKensie to the Columbia Fire, the IWC WR corp has been hurting. No more. IWC Owner Whiskey Tango obviosly said, we need targets for Chaplin, and picked not one, but three receivers in the top 60.
First up, Chris Chaplin. Last year he was 288 for 514 and 3132 yards with 19 TDs and 16 Ints for a QB rating of 72.9 in Newark. Not exactly great numbers for a star QB, but getting sakced 38 times probably did not help. Expect a large pickup in production from Chaplin this year as he is behind a very solid Snipe Hunter line, and with a star RB like Beamer behind him, there is no reason this 9 year vet can't lead the Snipe Hunters to their first division titile. But on to the interview:
Coach Hostetler: Ladies and gentlemen, and roadrash, Today is the day you've all been waiting for. you get to meet the latests additions to the Snipe Hunter roster. But first, are there any questions for me?
DM Herald: Rumor has it that you are moving to a West Coast or Run-n-Shoot type Offense. Is it true?
Coach Hostetler: That rumor is half true. Our O is centered around the run. Always has, always will. But by opening up the field with a West Coast or Run and gun, will definely improve our running game. The first two years were all run, and had mixed results. Aubrey was only averaging 3.75 yards per carry. We think by opening the field, and reducing the workload on Aubrey, that not only his numbers will improve, but his goal of shutting that load mouth in SLC will come to fruitation. Next?
IWC Times: Last years collapse, seamed to be centered around another loadmouth, but this one being Snipe Hunter Sherwood Hack. He is normally very vocal yet has been MIA in the last few weeks. We've also heard rumors that he might have been kidnapped? What is going on with the Snipe Hunter Place Kicker.
Coach Hostetler: That will all be cleared up a little later.
roadrash: What is James Kroll's status? Will he be ready to compete against Chaplin at training camp, or will he be released or traded?
Coach Hostetler: The trainers are not ready to give us a firm date on his return, but he will not be attending training camp due to the injury. I spoke to him immediatly after the Chaplin/Jones trade to ensure him that he did have a home on this team this year, and potentially beyond.
Coach Hostetler: Well that is enough questions for me, lets get this show moving. First I'd like to introduce Chris Chaplin and Justin Jones.
Chris Chaplin: I don't have a stement or anything, so questions?
roadrash: Chris, I'm sure you've given your new Offense a good once over, and probly noticed that the Snipe Hunter O just did not produce last year. What are your predictions for this year?
Chris Chaplin: Well the first thing I did when I got here was invite the entire Iowa City O over to my new house for dinner. I enjoyed my time in Newark, but I am very excited by the weapons we have here. Aubrey is amazing, easily one of the top 5 running backs in the league. Peter Stoll (TE), Michael Saucado (FB), all four of the new receivers, and possibly the best O-line in the league. I believe that the AFC North is in for a shock, and I don't think that we can fail this year. We are still a run team first, and pass second. So I dare our opponents to stop Beamer. If they do, then we will unleash a deadly passing game.
DM Herald: Justin, rumor has it that one of the reason's you were quiet after the trade was that your were not happy about the trade to a team that has almost no one on the D-line. Yet soon afterward you signed a rather large contract extension with Iowa City. What are your thought on your new team?
Justin Jones: Obviously, Iowa City needed help on the D-line. Especially considering that this division is very run heavy. I think the D-line is significantly improved. I think that running against Iowa City is going to be rough on any team that tries this year. And I think that the secondary is already in place for Iowa City to be a dominate defense this year and beyond.
roadrash: What did happen to Hack (K)?
Justin Jones: He has been sacked.
roadrash: Released?
Justin Jones: No sacked. He is hanging in his locker in a sack until such time that he learns to keep his mouth shut.
roadrash: Umm, ok, can we speak to him?
Justin Jones: You want to be sacked?
roadrash: No.
Justin Jones: Next question?
At this point I made my exit. Justin Jones, the new starting LDE for Iowa City. He has 13 sacks last year with Newark, which is almost as many as the entire starting IWC D-line. Obviously an improvement by anyones calulations.
Joining him on the new line is former Boston DT Joshua Conners.I wan not able to speak with Conners, since Justin Jones, who was also named media relatiosn director, has not authorized me to speak to him.
Mr. Jones did allow my to speak to Beamer about Aubrey's latest word war with SLC star James Tart. All I could get form Beamer is, "I'm not worried about Tart this year. I believe that our record will say all we need to say this year. With the new cast members, I think I'm more worried about getting to the Bowl game. But I can't help but realize that I'm going to be better than Tart this year. It's just that simple."
