It has been a very busy off-season for new coach Dominic Hamrahi and his coaching staff, as they had a lot of work to do to improve on the Renegades who have finished last in the South the past two seasons.
The first big move was to trade star receiver Kurt Bice to Oakland as some would speculate it was a cap move, but in the process they picked up Oakland's 1st and 2nd picks in this years draft, both 8th picks of the round.
Three rounds of the draft have gone by already, and it appears Hamrahi has filled in some of the many glaring holes on the Renegades, especially on both sides of the line. He traded the Oakland pick to Anchorage in exchange for talented defensive end Richard Mitchell, he also picked up a 3rd round pick which he picked up DE Jonathan Stewart who is expected to be a backup to start, and he received young NT Nicky McDougal who is rumored to make a transition to RDT as Houston plans to open the season at 4-3, but those were just whispers around the draft, nothing confirmed yet.
On the offensive side, he traded down his #3 overall pick which he was able to pick up big LT Charles Overton, as well as the 14th pick of the 2nd round which he grabbed OG Deon Davis. In addition to that, he also has a 2nd round pick in next years draft.
With his other regular picks, he replaced receiver Bice with talented young receiver Luther Wolf, as well as traded for seasoned players like Mitchel Hayden, and Chris Camp. With a later pick in the draft, TE J.J. Crane was picked, which will give StClair plenty of targets to throw to this upcoming season.
Finally, with another pick in the 2nd round, the Renegades selected talented OLB Wesley McArthur to fill in for injured linebacker Henry who is expected to be placed on IR and will miss the entire season.
Overall it was a pretty productive draft for the Renegades who started the off-season $10m over the cap, but are now in very cap friendly shape they could probably take on some salary later in the off-season. Look for them to try and make a run out of the basement of the south for the first time ever.
