While some teams dabble in the free agent market a few teams made some internal moves that will help them for years to come.
A rundown of some of the key re-signings this offseason.
Salt Lake City gave star RB James Tart a big raise as he collected the largest contract in the Imperial league this season. This all but puts an end to the trade rumors surrounding him. This is a good move for SLC, as they continue for their quest for their first championship. One has to wonder about how their cap will look in 3 years.
Texas has resigned their star DE James Koonce to a multi year deal. Koonce has the talent to be a playmaker, but hasn't shown it on the field yet. Texas is hoping that Koonce will be more committed with the re-signing
Lawrence has resigned Tobias Stanfield. With legend RB Edward Gonzalez retired, more of the load will fall on his shoulders.
Superstar QB Julian Cartagena took a reduced restructured salary to stay with the Columbia Fire. Cartagena was expected to command more money, but in the end he decided that Columbia game him the best chance for success.
This feature is something that I will do periodically. I will give my impressions of the teams in the league that are up and coming, and those that are falling by the wayside.
Mover's and Shakers
1. Vancouver Killer Whales
Vancouver promoted HC Zach Brown from OC this offseason. This is a great move as Brown's ability to get the best out of both the offense and defense will proove invaluable. They've restructured both Allan Ho's and Dennis Colella's contracts to keep them in place for years to come. Match this with the FA signing of WR Joseph Bailey, the offense looks like they could put up some serious points next season. They've also restructured some of their OL contracts and are very solid at that position. Defensively they are led by Lance Delano and FA signing DT Jerry Daniel. Vancouver also has FA offers into former AP DE Stephen Berard and ILB Roger pappas. They should be good enough there aswell.
2. Iowa City Snipe Hunters
IWC made some big moves by trading thier #4 overall pick to Newark in exchange for AP DE Justin Jones and QB Chris Chaplin. Jones is the coup of the trade. He'll give IWC front line dominance on the DL. Chaplin should be solid enough to open up holes for RB Aubrey Beamer. Chaplin also exibits the ability to scramble as he ran for 743yds with a 5.9YPC over the past 2 seasons. IWC may look to draft some WR's to help out Chaplin and the offense. There are a few holes on this team, but they will make waves next season with their ball control offense featuring Beamer and FB Michael Saucedo
3. Oakland Assassins
Oakland's 3 year plan is in motion. Last years draft class of Gene Hamilton and Wesley Connell will help lead the offense which this team is built around. Newly acquired WR Kurt Bice will match well with WR Earnest Martinez and will give the assassins pelenty of options in the passing game. The Oline has some studs, but does have a few holes. Oakland has not been very busy int he FA market as they are only $2.11 under the salary cap. OAK will not draft until late in the 2nd rnd, and I expect them to target someone on the defensive side of the ball. OAK GM Jave has publicly stated that the team will use a 3WR set. I'm not sure that is the best thing for this Offense. By doing this they will have either star FB Matthew Myer or up and coming TE Richard Ventura sitting on the bench. We'll see if "the promise" can hold through
Teams going down.
1. St.Louis Cardinals
Why? STL has done nothing with this team in the offseason. Some have said that Suicane's been spotted in Vegas. These are the most important times in shaping a team, and STL is dropping the ball
2.Fresno Chaos
This is a team with very little talent and around $14 mil in cap space. They are not active in the FA market thus far. Their signing of MLB Dong Sisson does not fill all the needs of this franchise. Fresno has a lot of work to do.
3. Vermont Mountaineers
This team is losing players, plain and simple. These losses will affect this team more than they think. They still have talent, but in the tough NC East they'll find it difficult to to finish .500 if they don't soon start spending some of their $15.79mil in cap space.
