Bulldogs Defend Their Territory!
- by Spark Wonup
It was 40 degrees and pouring rain, the perfect setting for an intra-divisional clash between the Lawrence Phantoms and the despised Newark Bulldogs...
Both defenses enjoyed a fierce stranglehold over the opposing offense for most of the day. It was an excellent display of brash inovations in defensive techniques by both DC's. Lawrence's high-powered offense was held in check by a combination of the weather and Newark's near flawless example of their bend but don't break version of defense while the Bulldogs offense, short about 70% of their normal offensive line unit and struggling with the mud, just didn't seem to have the talent left to stave off a very hungry Lawrence defensive line aided by a back 7 that were instructed to stay in coverage roughly 85% of the game, tightly blanketing Newark receivers.
However in the end it would be the Newark special teams unit that would prove to be the difference, rattling (soon to be ex-)Lawrence kicker Darren Dunlap into missing an extra point with 1:56 left that would have tied the game and presented the Phantoms with a very real chance of sending the game into overtime. The result was a bitter 10-9 defeat for Lawrence that leaves their playoff chances in jeapardy while Newark remains neck in neck with Orlando for the division lead.
"Heartwrenching," Lawrence owner Jester Blaze stated when asked to comment on the game. "But then that's becoming the mantra of our season."
