It was a raining in Cleveland with 11:44 remaining in the second quarter with the Grizzlies down 10-0, and staring at a 1-3 record to start the season. Scott Nelson came out of the game holding his right wrist.
The Grizzly faithful held their breath, this was supposed to be their season, and it appeared as it was falling apart. Little did they realize that the savior of the season was going to be brash young QB out of Penn State.
Jerome Mueller proceeded to lead the Grizzly charge. With 3:39 left in the game, it appeared that the Grizzlies would complete the comeback, they were down 13-10, but were driving with the ball on the Cleveland 23. Julian Schwab took the ball to the Cleveland 2, where he fumbled and the ball was returned the other way for a TD. However, with a little luck, and a big special teams play, Mueller took the Grizzlies in for another touchdown, to make the final 20-17. Even though they lost the game, it was the first step in the Grizzlies' turn around.
The next week saw Hartford tie previously undefeated Boston 17 all. Capitalizing on the momentum from that game, Mueller went on a roll. He led the Grizzlies to wins over West Virginia and previously undefeated Wichita. Most impressive though were the two road wins to conclude the season in Reno and Boston, against two teams vying for the playoffs. Who knew that their season hinged on a simple loss of three yards in Cleveland?
