  • LRK 2033 Offseason & Draft Thread

Following up on last season's initiative I'm posting a running commentary of Little Rock's 2033 Offseason. Comments welcome and hopefully it will prompt one or two others to do the same with their teams. Let's ramp up the GM participation!

    COACHING CHANGES
I thought last season's staff did a decent job especially on offense where we finished 2nd in yards and points. With this group we did get to within 2 points of making it to the Front Office Bowl (thanks again for that StevenE!) but there were two problems that I wanted to fix for the 2033 season: Penalties and Defensive Playcalling.

With the franchise having the second best financial performance for the year we found ourselves with the 2nd overall pick in the Staff Draft and we had the opportunity, and scored, on one of those two priorities by signing Lou Howle as our new DC.

I've noticed a decent improvement on offense/defense in my other MP teams when the coordinator had a higher playcalling skill. Even though our former DC Jesus Stratton had an average rating in playcalling, Howle has a rating of about 80 and is better than Stratton (dare I say better than Jesus?) in both Player Development and Young Talent. Overall we think we got an upgrade here.

Unaddressed was the team's discipline issues. A league worst 117 penalties in 2032 for a league worst 888 yards. That's 7.31 for 55.5 yards per game if you're counting and while that's not as bad as the 2011 Oakland Raiders or the 1998 Kansas City Chiefs it was still way too many for my liking. Unfortunately for us Head Coach R.J. Rasmussen and his bottom-third Discipline rating will be with us for at least one more year.

    SALARY CAP
Last year salary cap trouble forced us to deal standout WR Luther Baez to London and in 2033 we still have money issues with eight starters entering the final year of their current deals.

With so many players in the last year of their contracts and so little free space we can't sign everyone so the focus is on securing our younger talent to long term deals and letting those that we can't sign play out their final year with the full knowledge that they will probably be playing elsewhere in 2034.

    TRADES
    SILB Perry Fitzgerald (37/37)
    Traded to Vermont for 5.18
Actually rated 41/41 by our scout, he played backup WLB for us earlier in the season when we ran a 34. Fitzgerald had a few good games for us but with persistent cap problems and a switch to a 43 he became expendable. The late pick we got for him might get us a backup, a special teamer or a chance to move up in another round.

    SLB Justin Cole (69/69)
Traded to Boston for 2.3 and 2034 2.x
A great, great all-round player. He can cover, can blitz, can play the run, can play Special Teams and he consistently made plays for me over the last two seasons. He will be missed. But by trading him we saved over $10M this year which allowed us to sign extensions with LG Bo Aranha (4th yr, 81/81), SS Kelvin Fackleman (8th yr, 67/67) and CB Hayden Godfrey (4th yr, 62/62) and also leaves us free to use the franchise tag on one of three other players next year when we expect to have about $20M+ to spare.

Cole joins the Boston Freeze and immediately improves their team at a position of need while the trade gives us pick 2.3 this year, which will hopefully net us a starter at another position, as well as a 2nd rounder next year so while it is sad to have to deal him I think it's a win-win for both us and Boston on this one.

1.30 DT Jim Jennings, North Carolina
    6'2", 293lbs
    Draft Grade 6.4

Ranked as the 15th best prospect, and 3rd DT, in the draft with a grade of 6.4 we were happy and surprised that Jennings was still on the board at 1.30. DT was a priority for Little Rock but we didn't expect him to be available and had been targeting Jalen Horibe (taken by Arizona at 1.22) and Willie Everett (taken by Arizona as well at 2.7). With both Jennings and Everett available we went with the combine scores and draft grade and selected the North Carolina standout. With former 1st round DT Karl Baxter leaving as a free agent Jennings is set to enter the lineup next to returning starter Walter Gerhardt.

1.31 FB Kristopher Kahn, Penn State
      5'11", 234lbs
      Draft Grade 4.50

With Calgary on the clock and looking to trade out of their pick a hurried negotiation got us back into the first round to select the top rated FB in this year's draft. Whether or not he would have lasted until our next pick is a moot point but with no FB on our roster, and for the affordable price of next year's 2nd and 3rd round picks, we didn't want to take that chance and pulled the trigger to select the run-blocker from Penn State. We love the ground game in Little Rock and Kahn should be good for a few more KRBs this season and with a top-end ST bar he should contribute in that phase of the game as well.

2.3 OLB Doug Vallet, Penn State
        6'5", 253lbs
        Draft Grade 5.2

With SLB Justin Cole gone the Thunder needed another OLB that could at least play the early downs and be productive against the run. Whether or not that is going to be Doug Vallet or not will remain to be seen. At 6'5" and 253lbs the Penn State LB is a monster in terms of size and has the skills to be effective at the point of attack against the run. While he is not a pass rusher he might be serviceable in coverage and while he figures to leave the field in our Nickel and Dime sub packages with a ST bar in the 60+ range we expect Vallet to be one more able body on our coverage unit.

2.29 K Caden Leaf, Ball State
          6'3" 216lbs
          Draft Grade 4.00

We would have liked to have re-signed veteran kicker Mickey Mayer but at $3.87M for this year we just don't have the cap room. Knowing that to be the case we scouted Leaf and liked the possibility of adding him to our roster. With a super-high Accuracy rating (72-87 post interview) which will be all the more important this season with PATs now being the equivalent of a 33yd FG we're confident that if we get close we'll be getting points. Leaf doesn't project the range on FGs that Mayer had but is as good if not better on kickoffs and hopefully that will help us in setting initial field position.

            3.30 RB Al Aldrich, Rice
            5'6", 211lbs
            Draft Grade 5.3

We're hoping that the diminutive but powerfully built Aldrich may be a long term replacement to RB2 Jeff Meyer. Meyer is coming off a 1000 yard season for the Thunder but is into the 9th year of his career and the team needs a long term option at the position.

4.29 TE Gus Woods, Southwest St. Minn
            6'5", 256lbs
            Draft Grade 4.5

Last year's 3rd round Parker Patterson remains the starter but Woods looks like he might be a good fit for us as a run-blocking TE. Like Patterson last year, Woods is a Div III player but has some blue combine values and the size you want in a TE, in real life at the very least. Let's see how he pans out.

5.18 WR Damian Walker, South Carolina
            6'0", 200lbs
            Draft Grade 4.0

At this point in the draft every prospect has flaws and often more than one. No secret here about why we took Walker with a ST bar in the 70-90 range and if he makes the team it will probably be for that reason.

5.30 OLB Monty Donaldson, Southwest Bapist
            6'3", 264lbs
            Draft Grade 4.6

Like WR Walker at 5.18 we like Donaldson as a possible ST contributor but he might also be good enough to play a role in our Run D and if his Pass Rush Technique bar is not an illusion he may give us another option off the edge on passing downs.

            6.22 QB Jeff Tolar, Rutgers
            6'2", 216lbs
            Draft Grade 4.9

The standout characteristics for Tovar are his Kick Holding bar and his 14 known formations. The interview on this guy came back as VO so I'm not waiting on pick #182 to do anything at all like pick #199 in the NFL draft and we'll have to wait for next year to find our QB of the future.

6.29 CB Weston Tilly, Texas Tech
            5'10", 180lbs
            Draft Grade 4.1

Another possible ST contributor and more so than Donaldson and Walker I'm hoping that this guy works out. With a big PH and ST bar I'd love to see Tilly as a gunner and generating turnovers on punt coverage.

            6.30 WR Matthew Green, Minnesota
            6'0", 196lbs
            Draft Grade 4.3

We need a 5th WR and between Green and Walker (5.18) I'm hoping that I find one. If Green's bars materialise at the top end of what they look like at the moment he'd be good enough to start for me although the practical reality of that happening is extremely unlikely. Having said that though you never know and in the words of Alexander Pope, "Hope springs eternal..."
