It is that time of year again for the Portland Year in Review. It is import to first congratulate Calgary on becoming the Imperial Bowl Champ. Everyone knew this year would be tough but with the addition of 2 first round picks all the fans were hoping for a better record but instead we ended with the same record from last year. Now let’s get to the review!
Management – In Armic’s first draft he managed to draft like a league veteran. Experts gave the draft an A-. It was up to HC Bernie Houghtlin to put it all together though. The team as a whole was more competitive but couldn’t get more than 5-11. For anyone wondering Portland comes in second for the weakest roster in the league So is Houghtlin performing magic with the team or is he the problem only time will tell.
QBs – Grade D+
QB G. Toviessi started out the season 2-3 with 10TDs and 3Ints with better protection he was abot to do the things you expect of a league vet. The issue with him is that he is injury prone. There are rumors that the Seals may be looking to replace him next season due to his cost. After his injury the Seals couldn’t find anything close at the QB position leading to a -6 Turnover Margin.
RBs/FB – Grade D-
Between RB Wolfe and Barton they combined 895 yrds 4TDs and 4 fumbles. The Seals need more production from their running backs putting the future of both players into question. FullBack on the other hand did a great job blocking.
WRs – B+
The receivers here in Portland are some of the best in the league this group is lead by Ryan Stargell. 1400 Yards, 10TDs, and only 3 drops. He is followed by the underrated Skip Mayes when this savvy Vet is supposed to stop producing 12 years in the league he could be coming to the end of his Career and it doesn’t seem like WR Picard is the guy to fill the void.
OL – C+
The name of the game on the OL was competition. Tolwinski appears to be exactly what Portland thought he was when they drafted him. He is still raw and is getting better let’s hope he can make it to what the experts project him to be. On the other side of this it looks like this could be the last year for Hugh Lee in a seals uniform. 2 other bright spots came from RG Yaw and C Morton who made a huge difference this year and should be a main stay on this line. A RT will round out the line and could make the new QB feel safe.
TE – B
A position that went from an F last year we are giving a B because of the Addition of Rasolomalala. He played all over the field from TE to FB to WR. The only complaint here is why has he not received the ball more than he did. Look for the HC to look for more ways to get him in the game in his second year. His back up Harvey is a solid blocker but not much of a pass catcher. It is hard to see time on the field when Rasolomala is ahead of you.
DL – B-
The Portland Pass rush was 5th in the league. Larry Price led the rush with 9.5 Sacks and 25 hurries. This position has so much strength that sometimes it is a struggle to get all of the players on the field like they should be. With Stronger Pass Coverage this team could easily double the Sack count.
Linebackers – C
The Linebackes have the same issue they had last year. Currently there is no MLB or WLB on this team that is worth starting. So SLB Kremers was forced to take the position although he was average the addition of a true MLB could take this defense to the next level.
Cornerbacks – C-
The loss of CB Whiting to Retirement and CB Bontrager to FA was to much for Portland to handle. CB Cox could not handle the Slot CB position like the Coaches thought he could when they resigned him last season. On the bright side Portland was top 10 in Comp Pct , Yards per Att. , and Yards per Catch.
Safety’s – D-
The coaches tried to fill this position in the offseason but couldn’t get the guy they wanted in the draft and settled with FS Richard Sedor who could be considered a bust. Tyrus Swan once again leads the team in tackles but does it matter if you got 100 tackles if they are beyond the first down marker.
Special Teams – C+
Ralph Swift should be resigned as he showed the team can rely on him to pin the opponent deep when the offense stalls. K Elmore should be out in Portland in the bottom 5 in multiple categories. There is no dynamic kick or punt returner on this team and the search will continue into next season.
Overall – C+
Another draft like last year could turn this team around. The seals are in the bottom of the league with 7 first round draft picks on the team. 27 million in cap space could be another year of spending or resigning to hopefully get Portland successful!
