  • LRK 2032 Offseason & Draft Thread

In the fine tradition established by Columbia and Houston I'm joining the fray and posting a running commentary of Little Rock's 2032 Offseason.

Feel free to comment, I won't be offended :-)

    TRADES

WR Luther Baez, 4th year, (57/57)
With a persistent cap problem, some expensive veteran stars and with a number of starters to be renegotiated next year the Thunder was forced into trading WR Luther Baez.

Baez was in the last year of his rookie deal and was chasing a 4 year/$40M deal that would have made it difficult to extend the contracts of SLB Justin Cole, LT Charles Footman and RG Bo Aranha next year. As tough as it was to let him go the call was made that saw Baez, pick 1.17 and a pair of 6th rounders traded to London in exchange for picks 1.10 and 1.24.

For London, Baez is an affinity match for Receivers Leader Walter Malone and will also move straight into the starting lineup where he should become veteran QB Danny Oulette's top target in 2032.

For Little Rock the top 10 pick gives us a shot at drafting an impact player while the extra first rounder lets us secure what we hope to be a solid starter at another position of need.

TE Frank Catalano, 9th year (51/51)
A great option in the passing game that struggled to get targets from Thunder QB Albert Gianettino, Catalano was only middling as a blocker and not a great fit for Little Rock's run-oriented offense. Add to that the fact that he was in the final year of his current contract and was looking for a 3 year/$22M deal and management made the call to move in a new direction at the TE position.

In Las Vegas a surfeit of DTs and no clear starting calibre TE on the roster led to a number of calls and deal was quickly struck that saw Catalano and a 2033 7th rounder being exchanged for DT Eddie Collier. While not a star player, with cap-friendly numbers over the next three years and a pass rush strength of 80, Collier provides the Thunder with depth at a position of need and will be handy as a nickel sub inside pass rusher.

    FIELD UPGRADE
Yes, the "Monstrous Midway", the field that ended the season of multiple players last year has been replaced! The offseason building project sees the turf of William Jefferson Clinton Stadium now rated as excellent and should alleviate the fears of the home team as they prepare for a push into the playoffs in 2032.

      DRAFT PICK

      1.10 FS Cole Connell, Army
      6-1, 220lbs
      Draft Grade: 6.3

      Cole Connell.jpg

Even though Connell was not a participant at the Combine with a long term solution needed at the FS position we scouted both him and Louisiana State's Dan Sellers and both came through clean. Sellers was clearly the number one option at the position (interviewed as under rated no less!) but for Little Rock the front office is committed to the concept of Total Football and so Connell's size and ability to play Special Teams (85-95 EN, 60-70 PR, 75-85 ST after being interviewed) put him on the organisation's short list of options for our pick at 1.10.

With Sellers going to Norfolk at 1.7 and top DT target Bradley Sparks selected at 1.8 the tension was high in the Thunder war room as we waited out the clock on Georgia's pick at 1.9. The Generals continued the early run on RBs by selecting RB John Tate and the Thunder handed in their card to draft their man.

Connell will provide more options on ST and also moves straight into the starting lineup for the Thunder. With SS Kelvin Fackelman and CBs Will Parella, Pedro Franz and Hayden Godfrey the Thunder looks set to field one of the strongest secondaries in the IFL in 2032.

Connell is gonna be an all-pro at Safety for a long-time. Wish I could get my hands on a safety like that. hahaha

@Hoosier - largely the same for me but a lot of it is because I have a bunch of good players with contracts all expiring around the same time. I couldn't keep everyone this year/next year and Baez, as my #2 WR, was both the most expendable and most valuable in a trade. But it's still going to be tight next year....

@BuddaKINGII - I hope you're right! Sellers looked like a stud and had all those red combine numbers but he's a bit on the small size and is no help in the return game. The other thing I loved about Connell is that he is 56% developed so with any luck he'll emerge from TC2 as an above average starter.

A good secondary can really help a pass rush
One of these days we will be winning instead of rebuilding.

Certainly true in real life but have you seen that to be the case in FOF7 as well?

                      DRAFT PICK

                      1.24 ILB Gabriel Donaldson, Nebraska
                      6-0, 238lbs
                      Draft Grade: 6.2

                      Gabriel Donaldson.jpg

Runs at the WR, DL and RB positions saw the highest graded LB in the draft still available at 1.24 and Little Rock wasted no time in selecting the best available player still on its board.

While we had other needs we couldn't pass up the highly rated, albeit under-sized, run stuffer from Nebraska who immediately upgrades our inside linebacking group. And, like FS Cole Connell (56% Developed), Donaldson (60% Developed) appears ready to be an immediate contributor.

For us the other intriguing opportunity with this pick is that at just 6'0" and with a sensational combination of high scores in Agility (7.37s), Broad Jump (116") and Bench (23 reps) Donaldson is more a MLB than a SILB or WILB and may be the trigger for the Thunder to switch from a 3-4 to a 4-3 in the upcoming season. Either way we will now need to move some of our younger backups so keep an eye out for an update to our trade block.

                        DRAFT PICK

2.16 DE Stanley Gitler, Notre Dame
                        6-4, 277lbs
                        Draft Grade: 5.7

                        Stanley Gitler.jpg

With 2nd round target WR Edwin Cox selected four picks earlier by Boston, Little Rock went with what it considered as the best available player yet again and this time going with Fighting Irish DE Stanley Gitler.

Draft Analyzer had him rated pretty highly and we're intrigued with either playing him at RDE if we stay in a 3-4 or the possibility of bulking him up and playing him inside if we switch to a 4-3 where his high Pass Rush Strength can come into play.

                          DRAFT PICK

3.16 TE Parker Patterson, Mars Hill
                          6-3, 247lbs
                          Draft Grade: 4.1

                          Parker Patterson.jpg

With no TEs on our roster and no more picks until the 7th round, Little Rock addresses a position of need by drafting the Divison II run-blocking TE out of Mars Hill (N.C). While Patterson offers us nothing on Special Teams, he looks like he may be a good fit for our running game. At the very least he is likely to be more effective in that role than recently traded TE Catalano.

Patterson is showing an intriguing combination of Avoid Drops/Courage/Adjust to Ball that may make him an effective option in the passing game as well. Looking forward to what he looks like post TC2.
