  • Portland Seals Year in Review

The Portland Seal have had a forgetful season but this is there season in review. After what everyone thought would be a good year after finishing 3-1 in the preseason. The Seals proved that preseason Records mean nothing when the games actually count finishing 4-12.

Management – Armic took over this team 3 weeks into the season. Some people thought he would add some needed energy into the team and he did in the beginning going on a 3 game win streak. The success didn’t last long as Teams caught on to the West Coast Offense leading to a 7 game losing streak. After going 0-6 in the division maybe in his first off season he can turn the team around.
    Positional Rankings.

    QBs – Grade C+

QB G. Toviessi started strong but seemed to fizzle out as the season went on leading to a QB Rating of 76.0 with 16TDs and 21Ints. The coaches benched him in the final two games with the playoff hopes gone they let 5 Year backup Malik Jarosek takeover and he led the team to a 1-1 record with a 90.8 QBR. The question here whether or not Toviessi is done in Portland?

    RBs/FB – Grade D-

The Running game was abysmal. It started out with Rookie Wally Barton but after 5 Fumbles lost in 5 games he was bench for Lavan Willie who only fumbled 1 time in the last 12 games. The problem here is that neither avg. over 3 yards a carry. Some people say it is the offensive line that isn’t creating wholes and some say the backs aren’t talented enough I wonder what the coaches think?

    WRs – B-

This Group was led by FL Ryan Stargell who continues to prove he belongs in the conversation when talking about the best WRs in the IFL, Landing in the top 10 in many different categories. We also can’t forget about Skip Mayes and Ray Wilkerson who both proved to be reliable in the passing game. Portland could be looking for a replacement for Skip Mayes as he is not getting any younger.

    OL – C-

This offensive line was pretty bad this Year and rumor has it that GM Armic Tried to make a moved for Ty Nord before the trade deadline but that never was confirmed. This O-line allow 64 Sacks this season and were unable to hold off some of the elite Rushers in this league when it mattered. A bright spot here is LT Van Bible who has proven he can come in and play well despite not looking like much when he first came on this team.

    TE – F+

To be blunt, the TE Position needs help here in Portland. Combined they only managed to score 1 TD and had no key blocks the entire season. There is a chance that none of the QB’s ever gained confidence in the TE’s and that led to their combined 300 yards receiving. However this is done this position needs to be addressed.

    DL – B-

LDE Jared Boyer led this team with 12.5 Sacks. The special thing about this DL is that there are no Superstars just 6 Consistent players that all found a way to contribute during the season. Another good thing about this unit is that the oldest player 29 and everyone is tied up for at least the next 2 years.

    Linebackers – C

The Linebackers are the weakest part of this defense and it showed as Offenses continued to throw over the middle over and over again for big gains. Where this unit shined was in the Run Defense where they ranked top 10 in the IFL. If SLB Diego Bridges can play as well as Linebacker Leader Kenneth Kremer then we could be talking about this unit as a strength as soon as next year.

    Cornerbacks – C+

The corners are going to have to prove that they can whether the potential loss of Whiting Louis. The Rumor has it that the Seals tried to resign him during the season but he hasn’t even let them know if he planned to even return after this season. If Bontrager Alton resigns then they could be in good shape. No matter what happens to this team in the upcoming offseason I would like to see more turnovers from this unit.

    Safety’s – C-

This unit would be ranked lower if it wasn’t for Tyrus Swan. His 98 tackles were almost double any other player on the team. The seals should be looking for a FS this offseason and if they find on this is another unit that could be talked about a lot next season.

    Kicker – D+

The Kicker…. The position everyone wants to blame when a game is lost but is given little credit when the game is won. Jumbo Elmore has to improve on his 75% in order to maintain his spot on this team look for a potential competition in camp.

    Punter – B-

Not much to say about Ralph Swift other than he is consistent and reliable he should have a job here for a long time.

    Overall – C+

Long story short is that the Portland Seals need more All-Stars they have all the supporting cast you can ask for on a team. With 51 Million in Cap Space look for them to be active in free Agency.

The Draft is over and now we have a better idea of what kind of team Portland's GM wants and a good idea what type of team we will see this year so lets review The Draft and take a quick look at FA.

Round 1 Pick 5: OT Tim Tolwinski 25/89

OT Tolwinski will take a lot of time to develop but the pay off here looks amazing. He looks like a tackle who can hold down the left side of the offensive line for the next 10 years. This pick also showed exactly what the goal was in this draft. FIX THE O-LINE. The question here is what does it mean for current starting LT Hugh Lee 46/46

Round 1 Pick 26: TE Terrance Rasolomalala 54/67

This pick was filled with controversy during the draft. With no TE's on the roster Portland was desperate to take the best one on the board. When rumors came out that Portland was moving to 27 other teams began talking about how they were making trades to 27 so Portland was forced to do what it takes to get there guy and moved to 26 for what some might say was way to much. Rasolomalala is the best Blocking TE of the draft and if he does not Bust then he could be a top 10 TE in the IFL.

Round 3 Pick 8: SS Richard Sedon 16/45

Potland had a need at safety and Sedon was on the top of the board at this point so he was the pick. Rumor has it that Darien Spadaford was the guy Portland hoped would fall to them at this pick.

Round 4 Pick 27: QB Caiden Richard 8/39

This pick confused a lot of people. With now 6 QB's on the roster why draft another QB. QB Grant Toviessi is in the 13th year and this could be a QB brought in to compete with Malik Jarosek 28/40 who started 3 games last season.

Round 5 Pick 1: OG Carter Yaw 15/49

Another Developmental Guy with high upside. Yaw is listed as RG on the roster but many believe that he could land at LG but there is also a belief that Hugh Lee will play LG Portland is finding is creating a good problem on the offensive line.

Round 5 Pick 5: RB Gage Sullivan 21/35

Sullivan appears to be a Pure runner. He will never be a three down back because he is an unwilling blocker. If he can develop those skills behind this new line he could be looking at a big season.

Round 6 Pick 6: FB Harold Strong 13/28

FB Strong was the best Blocking FB left on the board. Strong plays Full Back like a OG. He is not the guy who you want to give the ball to in 4 and 1 but you can trust him to block for the guy who is running in Fourth and 1.

            Pick 7 Pick 5: C Henry Morton 10/48

Possibly the Steal of the draft. Morton should be able to come in and compete directly with Chuck Dorgan for the starting Center spot.

Portland should be pretty strong upfront this year with this draft and the addition of RG Alex Stanton. If Portland is going to Improve on last season it will take these rookies and other young play makers stepping up and producing. It is also important to mention Portland went out and brought in a lot of High Intel Rookie FA to try and create a lot of healthy competition for on the roster. Training Camp and Preseason should be a lot of fun in Portland!

Nice write-up. Post draft (and pre TC of course) my scouts have Tolwinski as the player with the highest FUT rating (84) from this year's class.
