Vermont Not In As Bad Shape As You Might Think.
When you look at the Vermont franchise besides theirincredible new look logo there is not much to look at or even talk about. Theyare currently 2 and 11 and are looking at their 2nd consecutive top5 pick. In 2029 they were cap strapped with an aging roster that won just 6games. It was time to start the rebuilding process. Vermont’s only Bowl win was2010 with a young 43 year old Coach in Rico Sprouse. Sprouse went on to win 3 more IFL Championships. WhileVermont has had only one playoff birth since that 2010 Bowl win (2018).
After27 years of coaching in the IFL Sprouse was ready to retire and moved toFlorida. One month after the 2029 seasonhe gets a call to coach one last time. It was the first team that hired the 35 year old Offensive Coordinatorfrom Iowa State. Sprouse spend his first 9 years with Vermont. Now after 27years in the IFL he comes full circle to resurrect the team in dire need of a winner.
After his first draft he got what many thought could betheir staring QB’s in Neil Harden. After a disappointing season with less then59% passing, less then 75 QBR and 12 TD to 16 int it seemed Harden was going tobe one and done. When Texas Tech QB Owen Whalen declared for the IFL draft manyfigured with the 1st pick of the draft he was going to Vermont. Sprouse who liked the skill set of Harden andthought he still could be the guy. So he traded the pick and acquired 3 – 1strd picks, 2-2nd rd picks, and 2-3rd rd picks. Whalen whois having a nice rookie season has not improved the team as much since lastseason Madison has the same record after 13 games and they do now at 7 and 6. Thisseason Sprouce had inserted his East Coast Offense that was so very popular in Massachusetts. The passing Offense which was 30thlast season has climbed to 21st in the league.
Besides the fact that Harden is a young QB, there are manystarters on this team that are very young. On offense there are 6 starters thatare 26 or younger. 3 of them are rookies. On defense there are 5 starters that are 26 or younger.2 of those players are rookies. The starting age of the starting secondary is24 years old. Two other defensive rookies were on the opening day starters butthey are on IR. What is really promising is that the Owls will have 6 picks inthe first 2 rounds of the draft. The future does look bright for Rico Sprouseand the Vermont Owls.
