  • Stupid Old Man: A Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu Blog.

Today Jester Blaze, a 35 year old man with a chemically addicted body - characterized by most as a "quitter" in this life - took the first steps down the BJJ path as a day 1 White Belt. The last time I submitted another person was with a rear naked choke at age 5-7 area. Since then every move in every fight I've been in has been a strike of some sort or a set up for a strike, including a quick boxing stint in 2000. I know nothing of this "grappling".

As warm-ups ended and I was dripping sweat despite doing some drills half-assed and incorrectly, I looked to my side to see an attractive girl with perfectly dry skin apparently unfazed by the workout thus far. This was going to be an ugly hour!

After running on fumes for drills on breaking guard and also on gaining side control against someone on their back and kicking up, it was time for some 1-on-1 grappling. Naturally, the pair-ups are most experienced Vs. least experienced (which is great for details during the drills but makes for a David/Goliath situation come head-2-head time) so knowing solely a rear-naked choke it was "go time" for me to submit the best in class. After a few minutes of being twisted into akward positions but doing enough to disrupt potential submissions with balance and a possible plyometric strength advantage I found myself victim to an Oma Plata.

I always wondered what it would be like to tap. Strangely, the pain never reached a high point... it was just a quick message to the brain that something was going to "break" and not just "hurt" which caused an instinctual reaction to tap.

Next up was a prototypical lesson in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu as I faced a shorter/smaller opponent who I rather easily overpowered but without any technique I eventually gassed and was choked out. I wasn't exactly on empty but I was "knocking" and every time I had a momentary lapse of stamina this dude improved position like a boa constrictor. Humiliatingly, I accepted the choke before it actually happened which is tough to swallow.

It was then 5 minutes before the end of class and time for me to head to the bathroom just in case I puked.

First thoughts: I don't like Gi's. Can I compete physically for a full hour with non-potheads? I "left it all out there" and I love this game!

    ******

Fun fact: There seems to be a lot of farting in BJJ due to the positions/pressure.

Pretty cool that you're doing this. It takes a lot of willpower to even get yourself there. Looking forward to hearing more in the future.

        Thats awesome. Good luck.
We have a 19 yr old in town who is trying to get on the MMA circuit. He has the potential and pedigree to succeed.
He is heading to Brazil this summer to an academy there to learn jiu-jitsu.

He probably lacked the confidence just yet to hit on her. wait a few more weeks until he's whopping some tail first.

I returned a couple of smiles to the girl but 1 hour is not a long time to learn despite my aerobic handicap so I'm 100% focused on BJJ while there. She was also there with someone who I assume to be either her man or brother.

lol @ Matt not knowing me. It took all I had to not walk in banging on the wall screaming "The Champ is here!!"

Just skip the BJJ and go straight to the farting. It can be just as deadly.

Day 2: It's evident there's a clear difference in stamina between the blunt smoker and the rest.

I got paired up with a guy I'd estimate weighed 230-260lb. "BJJ is about balance/deflection/etc..." Today was flip day and flipping this guy felt just like flipping 230-260lb!

Eventually the flip leads to an arm bar... yet I don't know the details of an arm bar despite attending the class. I talked to one guy about working together during some open mat time to learn some details. I plan to do a lot of that since the class has really just been a workout for me so far.

I talked to the same dude about having the instinctual urge to strike at all times and he told me that once I get 3 stripes (which happens in like 3-4 months or so) I can join the MMA classes to incorporate strikes.

Quite a few joints are sore, which is awesome. Other than post-street-fight I haven't felt this since high school or so.

Definitely got dominated on 1-on-1 grappling today. I'm thinking since we do that at the end of class when I'm tired 2-3 times over that it's probably gonna happen for a while.

I am a huge fan of MMA. This is great Jester. Keep it coming. I have wanted to learn jiujitsu but I have one surgically repaired shoulder and the other is due. Would it be impossible to start this with that kind of injury or limitation? I still lift weights but I am pretty sure the rotator cuff on my left is partially torn.

I'm definitely not the best to answer this right now but a few guys at the gym are injured and I assume more are injured and not showing up. I had to sign a "..in the event of injury or even death..." thing to join. I know I wouldn't want to be doing this with a shoulder injury.

At the same time I guess if you just wanted to "go light" to learn the moves you could be matched up with someone similar each class. From the standpoint that no one's gonna care about your shoulder on the street I guess you'd benefit as much as anyone from learning some BJJ/MMA.

Day 3: Learned a pretty nasty reversal to being held on the ground in a headlock while getting pounded in the face. Certain moves are naturally suited to different body types and this one seemed to work well with mine.

We worked on guillotines which actually confirmed that I've been doing them right all along. Being 6'3" a lot of people have tried to take me down so I've put on many guillotines in my time. The defense to said move was similar to another move from a previous class so the repetition was cool since this is all new and I'm not retaining nearly all of it.

When it came time to "roll" we rotated amongst everyone today, which is how I like it. I fell off to an embarrassing 0-4 start before winning 2 in a row to end it. However 1 of the losses I'm pretty sure that I won so I relaxed before "losing".

Two of the losses were absolutely ridiculous and less than 3 seconds each; total domination of speed, strength, and technique! I talked to both guys afterwards and both were experienced elsewhere though currently Gracie white belts. 1 is US Military and if we were on the battlefield I'd have been dead before I knew much of anything.

I'm seriously hungry for knowledge so that I can stop bringing a toothpick to a gun fight at the end of each class.
