Some of you might be aware of the old Abbott and Costello skit "Who's On First." which this story reminds me of.
Those who haven't can nonetheless see the humor in the following paraphrasing of a conversation I had while working at the food bank. Keep in mind I was high when this happened or it probably wouldn't have gone so far like it did.
I was stationed in line next to an elderly Asian lady.
Asian Lady: (very quietly) "My name Mine"
Me: (thinking I'd heard but assuming I was wrong) "Huh?"
Asian Lady: (again quietly) "My name Mine"
Me: (reassuringly) "Yep, your name's yours."
Asian Lady: "No. My name Mine."
Me: (totally confused) "Yep, your name's yours. My name's mine. We're all... named."
Asian Lady: "No! My name Mine!"
Me: (blasted and getting uncomfortable) "Lady. I don't know what's going on here but I'm just trying to pass out food."
At this point her Asian friend leaned over to get in on the "conversation".
Asian friend: "Nooo. Her name is Mine."
Me: "Oh her name's yours now? Right, right, nice, sweet. Again... passing out food. Don't know, don't care what's going on here."
At this point it was explained that she was introducing herself and I felt like an asshole and wondered if I'd just been racist.
