Hockey Day Minnesota(!)

One of the best days of the year for someone who likes hockey and doesn't plan on moving much!

All items are on FSN North with miscellaenous hockey-related items in between games:

10am - Eveleth vs. Lake of the Woods - Lake of the Woods’ Baudette Bay
1pm - St. Thomas Academy vs. Hill Murray - Xcel Energy Center
5pm - Wild vs. New York Islanders - Xcel Energy Center
8pm - Gophers @ Denver - Magness Arena
11pm - Blaine vs. Roseau - Lake of the Woods’ Baudette Bay (tape delay)

The two games up in Lake of the Woods are being played outside. It's -2 degrees out with windchills around -30.

3 high school games, 1 ncaa game, and of course one nhl game.

Being from the south I have always been curious about how that was done.

Is HS the highest level that would routinly play on a frozen pond?

I don't think any level routinely plays outside anymore. Outside rinks are mainly used for pickup games much like outside basketball courts. There is, however, a big pond hockey tournament that is held in the Twin Cities every year.

And then there are throwback games like the two today or the one NBC showed a month or two ago when the Penguins played the Sabres outside in Buffalo. Very likely that the University of Minnesota and/or Minnesota Wild will play a game at the new outdoor Gopher football stadium soon after it opens in 2009.
