the vista/xp issue is no biggie. I have a vista desktop and 2 xp desktops networked together and the work laptop that just uses the internet connection and is not part of the network is vista.

if you dont hard cable your desktop to the router then you will need a wireless card for the desktop...your basic setup will be cable line coming out of outlet into the cable modem...the cable modem plugging by ethernet cable to the wireless router...then out of the other 4 (typically) slots you can plug in hard wired desktops etc by ethernet...you can have a shitload of wireless items on the network...i plug my 3 desktops into the router and then use the 4th slot for a network harddrive enclosure with two harddrives in it...then my xbox360 and my laptop connect wireless and so does my network print server gizmo that is then usb cabled to my two printers...then all my pcs on the network can use the printers...

it will take several hours of scratching your head and hooking shit up and then looking at control panel functions and scratching your head some more...again im not techie material and i got it all done without killing myself or anyone around me...

Don't forget that you need at least one computer with a cable at setup. You cannot set up the router without it.

And as da burner said, you definately won't run into an Vista/Xp issues. I have a laptop with Vista and one with XP, as well as two desktops with XP and I have no trouble getting them to work together. The initial sharing-stuff is slightly different in Vista than in XP though, but it shouldn't be a problem to figure out.

once you buy your router there will be diagrams and stuff to look over to help you out...i think he is basically telling you that you need to have a computer, ethernet cable, router, ethernet cable, modem, cable line, cable outlet all in succession as you hook it up...you use the PC to set up the router etc...the instructions will tell you to hook all the stuff together and then you power them on in the order listed...it will be something like turn on modem, turn on router, and then turn on PC etc...you will do fine...have faith in your mad PC skillzzzzz
