I am getting high speed internet and want to go wireless. Would it be to my advantage to pay Best Buy $129 to come to my house and setit up (security and whatever else there is to do)? I have never done it and need some info on the process and if I can handle it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

    Tom

If you're getting DSL, there are modems that can give off wireless signals and will act as both a hardline and wireless connection. If you don't get one of those modems, setting up a router is a cinch. Setting up basic security is also a cinch as well. All you need to know is how to read diagrams and instructions.

So the better option is going to wal-mart and buying a router and doing it myself. ok, cool.

Getting a cheapy or not is up to you. More than likely the cheapest Linksys will work fine. If you want to get a good connection on two floors, then you might want to get something a little better. I have a Buffalo, which is another good brand. Everyone carries Linksys stuff.

Do you have a wireless card currently? You also have to pay attention as to what type of wireless standards you can get via your wireless card. A, B, and G are the players here.

dont forget the xbox live etc issues...if you h ave one of those make sure the router is a cooperative router for the xbox...some of them arent and it will piss you off to no end...

the overall process is really pretty easy...in pushing 40 and dont have a comp science degree and i have a wireless network and some wired stuff and 3 desktops, my work laptop, a wireless print server and 2 printers (and the xbox360) all hooked up with my grubby paws...if i can do it so can you...

dont pay those bastages a penny to do simple stuff like this...

Will there be an issue if my desktop is running xp and my laptop is running vista?

Where do I find if I have a wireless card on my desktop?
I went to network connections and have a PRO/100 VE Network Connection. Is this going to work for me or will I have to purchase a wireless network card for the desktop?

That is your network interface card. The wireless card would be in the same place in device manager. Do you have two desktops or what? Wireless is primarily for laptops and your desktop only needs a wireless card if it's not going to be connected to the modem.
