  • Kuwait smells

So I have a crap connection here, and downloading the league files takes about an hour and a half. I figure Iraq will be a bit better than here. Hopefully it'll have less sewage trucks running around. Running + sewage smell = lame

Thanks for the well wishes for my deployment. I'll be more involved once I get settled in Iraq in a couple weeks.

Been in Kuwait a week now, nothing too crazy going on, just trying to get adjust to the time zone changes. I watched Manny Ramirez's walk off homer the other night, but it was as breakfast was ending somewhere around 7:30 am here. I'm 7 hours ahead of EST time currently, so the morning football games start at 9 pm here and with 5 am wake ups it isn't feasible to watch them. That's the big bummer right now other than being away from home

On a bright note there are a good number of perks on Camp here. There's a KFC, Taco Bell, Nathan's Hot Dogs, Burger King, Subway, Panda Express, Pizza Hut, and a few others I'm forgetting here. No one does anything during the day though because it's ridiculous hot out here. I'm running a reflexive fire range tomorrow for the company (120ish people) so it should be a hot and busy day. We head to Iraq next week where I'll hopefully have a better schedule and a better internet connection. I'm heading to bed now though, I'll post another update in a couple of days or when I get to Iraq.

Good luck to you Hawkster. I'm heading over myself next month. Let me know where you deploy.

Not trying to be a smart ass, serious question...

What makes you think you would get better internet in Iraq over Kuwait?

                  Cring,

It's the way comms are set up and how resources are used. Kuwait is normally a place to stage and enter Iraq. Most units are only there for a couple of weeks. The MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Relaxation) guys have probably put in most of thier cash to the bases in Iraq where units are staying for 15 months. I know BSA Anaconda, outside of Balad, has decent internet connectivity. It's just a matter of waiting in line for your chance on the computer.

I also know that Hughesnet now has wireless internet coverage via satellite over the entire AO. Problem is, it's crazy expensive.

Thanks. I thought Kuwait had a permanent base and therefore would be the better place for that kind of stuff. Not too mention it has a little less chaos going on. Ask questions and you find out the truth.....

Kuwait has a permanent base, and the services for the base are set up well for folks stationed there. But for transients, who are just waiting for a flight out, they are competing for a small amount of resources. Think a free internet cafe in LAX.

Yeah, I was on a small transient post with a couple net cafes with ridiculous lines and horridly slow free wireless (assuming you could stay connected). Now that I'm set up in Baghdad I've paid for monthly internet service and will have a solid somewhat-less-than-broadband connection for the duration of my stay. The base I'm at is the largest in Iraq and has thousands of troops/contractors/immigrants working here.

Anyway, I'm situated now and should be more involved once again just in time to watch the playoffs pass the Matadors by in their last season in Albuquerque. Now I just need to get my TV working so I can watch the NFL games tomorrow. The morning games start at 8 pm here and I don't have to deal with local teams getting television priority (boo Arizona Cardinal games back in the states). I do miss my Sunday Ticket though. It's the little things that keep your spirits up when you're in a warzone

I'll keep you guys posted. There's still a threat here, but it's minimal. There were two deaths here a couple weeks ago but its all from random mortar attacks where insurgents just lob some rounds in here blindly and run. It's frustrating when you can't do anything in retaliation because the method of attacks don't even allow you to see your enemy 95% of the time. I'm just glad I don't have to go out on patrols and deal with the IED (improvised explosive device) threat. The guys who do that have my utmost respect. I'll more than likely stay inside the wire the whole time I'm here.
