No, I think a more fair game for the Raiders would be Washington not Oregon.

Yea yea, talk shit today while ya can. Welcome to the Andrew Walter era!

Browns wary of Walter's deep ball
          Jeff Walcoff, Staff Writer
          09.27.2006

When a team is 0-3 and anxious for its first win of the season, facing off against a quarterback making his first career start can be an ideal circumstance. But as several veterans of Pac 10 football will tell you, Raiders QB Andrew Walter is no player to overlook.

The 2005 third-round draft choice sat out his entire rookie season with the Raiders as the team's third quarterback. He made his NFL debut during the fourth quarter of the team's season-opening loss to San Diego, completing 2-of-5 passes for 28 yards.

He saw his most extensive game action two weeks ago during a 28-6 loss to Baltimore, when he entered early in the game and had the type of disastrous day cliche for a young NFL quarterback. He registered an 18.4 passer rating on 10-for-27 passing for 162 yards and 3 interceptions. He was sacked 6 times.

The team had its bye last week giving Walter a week to recover and prepare for the Browns. Walter will make his first career start in place of Aaron Brooks, who is out with a pectoral injury.

If his collegiate career is any indication, however, it's only a matter of time before Walter is lighting up defenses in the NFL. He sits near the top of just about every Pac 10 career passing list with names like Carson Palmer, Drew Bledsoe, and John Elway.
He is sixth in conference history in career passing with 10,492 yards and second in touchdown passes (85). In his career, he marked six 400-yard games.

Walter, Matt Leinart (USC) and the Browns' Derek Anderson (Oregon State) are the only quarterbacks in Pac 10 history to post three 3,000-yard passing seasons. On Oct. 19, 2002, Walter set the Pac 10 single-game passing record with 536 yards vs. Oregon. He completed 31-of-53 passes with 4 touchdowns during a four-hour game the Sun Devils won, 45-42.

Browns linebacker Mason Unck started that game for the Sun Devils and finished third on his team with 7 tackles, adding a half sack. He knows Andrew's quarterbacking style well from their time together at ASU.

"Andrew is a guy who can pass all day long if he has time," Unck said. "He has a great arm. He scrambles better than what you think and he's very intelligent. He knows what to do with the ball. If they give him time, he can definitely get the job done."

But what Walter seems to become recognized for most is his ability to complete the deep pass.

During the record-setting game at Oregon in ‘02, Walter completed passes of 67, 58 and 51 yards. He completed additional passes of 67, 72 and 85 yards that season.

When asked about Walter, Unck, lineman Babatunde Oshinowo (Stanford) and running back Jerome Harrison (Washington State) all mentioned Walters' ability to throw deep.

"In college he had a real good deep ball," Harrison said. "He liked to go up top."

Unck echoed, "Like I told the coaches, the guy can throw really far. He's got a cannon and a quick release."

The combination of Walter and deep threat Randy Moss could be a dangerous one for the Raiders.

The lone knocks on Walter are his inexperience and perceived immobility compared to the team's starter, Brooks. The typical way to attack a quarterback of that ilk would be to keep the pressure on and limit his time to throw.

          Unck and Oshinowo agreed.

"When we're rushing the passer we have to get our hands up, obstruct the field of vision, and collapse the pocket," Oshinowo said. "This is his first start so we have to make him uncomfortable in the pocket so he doesn't have time to pick apart our defense. We have to make it so he can't jut sit back and read. He has to be rushed and hurried."

Unck added, "The key to beating him is pressure because he's smart with the ball. He's not a scrambler like Brooks. If you're going to say there's one thing he can't do like Brooks it's scramble. He'll get rid of it to avoid a sack, but definitely keeping pressure on him is big."

In recent years, for every Pac 10 quarterback like Palmer who has succeeded, there seems to be another like Ryan Leaf, Akili Smith and Cade McNown who has turned to a bust.

The Raiders think they have a winner in Walter.

"He is a young, big kid who has the ability to throw the ball down the field," Raiders head coach Art Shell said. "He's a smart kid. He grasps things pretty well. Like with every young kid that is a rookie in this league, it's tough to come in and play the quarterback position. He has all of the tools necessary to be a good football player for us."

Who gives a fuck what he did in college? David Klingler was a stud wasn't he? Well, at least he was a 1st round pick though.

ROFL, dude, this is his FIRST start in the NFL! Peyton Manning threw 28 interceptions his first year starting. I like what I see from Walter still. Considering the sad ass cast he is surrounded by he is playing quite well.

Dude, you need to come back to earth. This team is gonna be horrid for a long time. Theres a reason Art Shell is your head coach. The Raiders are the new Cardinals. Think about that.

Dude. Will you get a goddamn team and get your sorry ass back in this league? I'll never forgive you for leaving me with Herr Hooter in charge of your team. NEVER!

But, I'm with you on Walter. He was the one bright spot of their preseason from what I saw and it's about time they just handed him the keys. He'll be fine.

I'm also a closet Ducks fan. Nike practically owns that team, but they're fun to watch.

I am considering it. It would have to be the right team. I would never take over teams like Boston, Cleveland or Hartford. I was in this league for 3 years and still didn't realize they were actually teams in this league. I would want a team with an attitude like SLC, Wichita or Louisiana.
