  • S to CB

I thought I'd share what i've learned about switching S to CB. So i'll post a couple screen shots and then talk about it.

The new ratings at CB are not perfect because it's just in game at this point but i'm guessing they won't change that drastically. currently when I move him to CB it says he'll retain 96%, my plan is to have him lose weight during TC then move him afterwards. I think 189 is the perfect weight to move so hopefully that's where he'll finish after TC.

It's interesting looking at the difference in ratings between the two positions because his bars are the same at each position. The reason for the difference the ratings for CBs are weighted towards BnR and for S's it's more run d. The single most important bar for a CBs ratings is BnR and that's why Bronson has such a significant jump in ratings when I move him.

Perhaps you can correct me if I'm wrong but logically I always figured Play Diagnosis to be much more important for S than CB since the S is covering a part of the field (most often) whereas the CB is usually responsible for a single guy and doesn't necessarily need knowledge of the big picture.

I was unaware of BNR. I hope FOF 7 changes in that regards. I can't imagine a scenario where coverage ability isn't a CBs most important attribute... and here we stand playing a game where BPR WRs are king. IRL BNR is the absolute worst scheme to defend the deep threat AND the deep threat is the easiest route(s) to cover. If only FOF provided us a way to use coverage. Not "coverage" but actual coverage.

FOF is such a good sim engine it's easy to forget that and apply football logic to the game. I have no idea how the exactly structure of the players ratings are calculated. Jim has been quoted before as saying multiple coverage bars come into each play. Lets say the defense called is 3 deep zone. The CB and S will have different skill bars at play. The CB could potentially start in BnR then drop into zone coverage and once the ball is thrown to him his M2M skill is factored in. All those skills are used even though the overall coverage is 3 deep zone. In the same 3 deep zone call the S doesn't have his BnR bar used, initially it's his zone skill then if the ball is thrown towards him it's M2M.

Don't take all this as 100% fact, but I think it's mostly if not all accurate. Like I said I know Jim has commented that multiple coverage skills are used during a play. I know Ben E Lou has commented on his favorite skills for different positions and i'm pretty sure it's not because he always runs a specific defense but it's more likely that CB's will play BnR or M2M and S's will more likely play zone.

Thanks, zbuck. I had read that before. The logic of Jim makes sense but the execution seems short on the DB side as far as strength of skill. I'm just not sure why he doesn't have some type of "strength slider" for each position/skill so that when something like the WR BPR thing jumps up it would simply be a matter of adjusting one variable to tone down the strength of that skill. I've wondered this about every football game over the years but I guess my focus is on gameplay over time and naturally those in charge are more interested in initial sales, which just makes sense for them.

BTW - I only play football games using "football logic" so there will always be at least a tier above me for game playing ability regarding each specific video game. The game only interests me so far as it simulates football. Where it differs is where my interest dwindles.

I'm in agreement with you. I've been able to separate logic and the game but I'm still guilty of it from time to time. I would say the single biggest change I would like to see is far more detail on defensive game planning. It would be so cool to be able to assign a specific DB on a WR and then dictate coverage and situations where help comes.

For better or worse I read somewhere that Jim likes a "paper, scissors, rock" type of game rather than a "head-to-head" style for reasons of longer replayability. He may be right seeing as I'm sure he's done his research, but it does leave us as gameplayers feeling out of control in a lot of areas.

I've been doing these conversions for awhile....and I've been playing BNR defense for quite a few years. I learned a good scheme from a team I took over in WOOF a couple of years ago. That team ran a lot of BNR because that represented the skill sets that were on the team. When I started to see some results with this bar, I got giddy and transferred the knowledge to my Bulldog team.
the one thing that I've learned is that you've still got to be careful of not overplaying 1 defense too much.

Yup. Just like the offense can get go in the tank if they call the same formation too much the defense can as well but you just don't get the message like you do for offense.
