  • Strategy Discussion: Specialization

I see lots of talk about big red bars, esp. on defense. But are big red bars the way to go? I mean lots of big red bars. I know big red bar players get the big bucks. Referring back to Jesters other thread, is that the best way to utilize resources? Do any of you use specialists? Where and why and how?

If I had 6 of these I think I could guarantee a Championship over a 5 year period:

Doesn't play well with others: However this guy is golden yet I can only use 1-2 of his type as I need somebody to blitz.

The difficult thing with FOF is there's no great single place for info. It's across the FOF world in little nuggets.

Here's a nugget i'm not sure is common knowledge. Some players are mostly in a specific coverage regardless of the coverage called. For example if you call bump and run coverage the CB's are in B&R but the FS is in zone so a FS with mostly B&R coverage skills isn't useful. Regardless of the coverage called the FS's zone skill is almost always the skill used.

I thought I remembered something Jim posted on FOFC (many years ago now) saying that a combination of the pass defense skills were used. Like a safety might be playing zone, but once a receiver enters his zone, the man and BnR skills were also factored in how well the FS actually covers the guy. I think the logic he gave is that some man skills are required even when playing zone.

It's also possible that I dreamed that Jim said that....

No you're right. I'm pretty sure the info comes from a thread yoda shared on FOFC. He asked support and got a pretty detailed answer regarding how different coverages apply. My guess is it's probably not a simple straight forward switch once he enters the players zone that the man coverage bar becomes active.

Ben E Lou says for FS he's only concerned with the zone coverage bar. I think it's the same for most LB and specifically the WLB.

Just curious on the CB profile..Man/Zone to match what your scheme does OR is this the best way to play defense?

Would a Cover2 defense be able to have its corners only have BNR and Zone bars and play effectively? I recall last season getting smoked in a totally BNR / Zone look and I'm wondering if BNR is just something I'm not supposed to be doing.

I just think that logically M2M and Zone should be the best skills for a DB and I'm a fan of players with high endurance.

In the early days of the IFL I had non-success using CBs with basically just BNR and Zone. So long ago that it could have been many reasons, especially chemistry/cohesion which I paid no attention too.
