I had something like that happen to me in another league. I believe there is a set of circumstances, which I have no idea what they are, that causes HAL to release players.

I signed a FA who put me at 47 active. My guess is the "53 man limit" is hardcoded into the "fix the roster" code that runs after picking up FAs.
