  • What's your ideal roster position allocation?

Looking around the league it's interesting to see the different team make-ups. Some teams hold less players at certain positions than I had thought possible.

Phantoms ideal roster goes like this:

QB: 3 (starter, young guy, mentor)
RB: 3 (all capable. no roster room for development here)
    FB: 1 (run blocker)
TE: 3 (starter, back-up, young gamble)
WR: 6 (3 FL/3 SE, 3 Big, hopefully meet my PR/KR demands here)
OT: 4 (starter and backup at LT and RT, balanced skillsets)
OG: 4 (starter and backup at LG and RG, balanced skillsets)
C: 2 (starter and backup, balanced skillsets with a nod to rushing)

K: 1 who can do both FG and KOs
P: 1 who can coffin corner

DE: 4 (starter and backup at LDE and RDE, both need pass-rushing)
DT: 4 (starter and backup at LDT and RDT, both need run-stopping)
    MLB: 2 (starter and backup)
OLB: 4 (starter and backup at SLB and WLB)
CB: 6 (starter and backup/nickel/dime at RCB and LCB, a passable veteran, and a young gamble, hopefully meet my KR/PR demands here)
S: 4 (starter and backup at SS and FS)

Open spot: KR/PR if not already on roster, otherwise Wild Card.

How do you build your teams?

    Clawz ideal roster:

QB: 3 (starter, young guy, mentor/kick holder)
RB: 3 (1 third down guy, the rest are speed guys)
FB: 1 (run blocker/pass blocker/blitz pickup. Don't care about other skills)
TE: 3 (Pass catchers. Don't care about blocking here)
WR: 6 (Route runners and big play guys, other skills are bonus, may also keep a ST gunner)
OT: 4 (starter and backup at LT and RT, emphasis on pass blocking)
OG: 4 (starter and backup at LG and RG, balanced blocking bars)
C: 2 (starter and backup or long snapper, run blocking is most important)

K: 1 who can do both FG and KOs
P: 1 who has high hang time and I also look for directional

DE: 4 (starter and backup at LDE and RDE, both need pass-rush tech very high)
NT: 2 (starter and backup at NT. Pass rush tech and strength emphasis)
MLB: 4 (starter and backup for SILB and WILB. Both have high run D and coverage skills)
OLB: 4 (starter and backup at SLB and WLB. Pass rush tech emphasis. SLBs need coverage bars also. )
CB: 4 (starter and backup/nickel/dime at RCB and LCB. Emphasis on M2M/BnR/INTs)
S: 4 (starter and backup at SS and FS, emphasis on Zone/Play Diagnosis/INTs. I like my SS to have run D skills also.)

3 open spots are usually filled with mentors or team leaders that are always inactive. They may also be ST gunners or KR/PRs if those needs are not filled with my other players.

      interesting ...

I probably come closer to the CLE model in that I run a 3-4 defense, but ...

my other observation is that it is tough for me to establish an ideal model since I look for players that can play more than one position. There is plenty of opportunity to double up for a backup in the O-Line, D-Line, Linebacking Corp and the Secondary.

I really don't have a model for positions count. But with that said, I do make count of identifying starters and backups in the offensive and defensive formations and then seeing how that sorts out for a position head count once I have them sorted out.

QB-3 (I like affinities & my primary backup to be the holder; avoids rust issues)
RB-4 (I'm horrible drafting RB's like to attack the problem w/ numbers)
        FB-1 (plug n play)
TE-3 (need +1; I think FOF is way out of date here. FB should be lumped w/ TE, rather than RB, given the success of H-back types in the modern game. requiring 3 RB and 3 FB/TE makes more sense to me. It would also raise the talent level league wide. Atrocious TE's make teams every year)
WR-6 ... possibly 7 (also like to get my return man/men from this group. like a WR @ fifth WR on the DC. have carried 7 many times)
        C-2
        G-4
        T-4
(looking to fill out a 2 deep especially in the exhibition season. don't mind dropping a RB or WR to develop an OT. 8 on the active roster ideally. short fat T to G is a favorite position switch. gets lots of red exp tags fairly quick)
        P-1
        K-1

        DE-4
        DT-2

misc DL-1 (I'm a DL whore; often developing a 7th speed rushing DE or run stuffing DT)
        OLB-3
        ILB-3

misc LB-1 (LB's seem very interchangeable to me. no need to fill out a 2 deep. often use a DE or S outside in the preseason)
CB-6 ... possibly 7 (CB and WR are two of the most important positions and sought after in the draft. always looking for mid 40's types who can play. pipeline approach)
S-3 (will play a vet CB here if needed)

          QB 3
          RB 3
          FB 1
          TE 3
          WR 6
          C 3
          G 4
          T 4
          K 1
          P 1
          DE 4
          DT 3
          ILB 4
          OLB 4
          CB 5
          S 4

All spots fluctuate depending on who I'm developing at different positions, but usually, this is what I aim for.

Good discussion, I kind of wish there was a practice squad to stash and develop some young players - but then the FA pool would be even more thin.
