FBs: pass blocking and blitz pickup

Any info from the "FOFC science guys" on this? If a FB has 100 pass blocking but 0 blitz pickup is he basically useless since he has the ability but won't ever be in the right spot? Or will he pick up defenders who beat the OLine but aren't blitzing?
