That's probably because you don't get your money back in most professional gambling. You're betting that you will win - any other result, including a tie, is a loss for you - other than a no contest and other such stated things.

For example, suppose that a college football game between Kansas State and Kansas had K-State as a 27 point favorite (quoted as K-State -27, or Kansas +27):

You lose the 'juice' money on a tie usually with a bookie. If you bet $100 and it was a push you pay the 10% juice money which would be 10 bucks. So you would get $90 back on a push.
