Those two things don't necessarily clash.. I can't wait for the draft to get here, because I want to make my picks quickly and see how my roster develops.

I'm with Jester 100%.. heck.. I'm with him 123% too. The time-limit for me is in case I feel like I need to think about a trade, but if I'm not trading the pick I want to make it ASAP to not hold the draft up.

I've been up to 3 a.m. on worknights to make picks.. I've woken up at 5:30 a.m. to make a pick.. am I hardcore? Hardly.. I'm in one single FOF-league. It's all about not wanting to hold the draft up.

I also want to point out that even if it goes unsaid, we appreciate everyone who stocks their utility and or makes their picks on time. So much of the focus goes to those who don't but I want to thank guys like Coder and yes, even Jester, and everyone who goes above the call of duty to not hold things up.

That's the key. Time limits don't mean all that much, because even reasonable ones, if used, would make the draft take forever. Even if you lowered the limit 2 hours, and everyone took 2 hours for every pick, the draft would take nearly three weeks. IHOF actually has a 14-hour time limit, but we get through the draft in 3-4 days, usually. I really don't know how it has happened, but somehow a culture has been cultivated there where no one wants to be "that guy" who holds up the draft. (I think Darkiller was the last holdout who was obsessed with making every pick manually, but he was finally won over.)

The most impressive draft I've seen is not IHOF, though, but OSFL--a league with mostly newbies. The OSFL somehow managed to cultivate that culture in its very first draft. That draft started on a Saturday morning, and was done by Tuesday night.

I've been in drafts that last a week or more, and in shorter ones. It's not just the "getting through" the draft, but the "event" itself that made the OSFL and IHOF drafts a lot of fun.
The side effect of folks picking quickly is that it gets people checking in, posting about picks, ragging on each other's picks, etc. The OSFL draft thread had 601 posts in the four days that the draft ran:

          http://osfl.oldredboat.com/modules.p...er=asc&start=0

I wish I were smart enough to give y'all more/better on how to get there, but really, I think Jeff's highlighted comment is the key: you've got to get your league owners in the mentality that they don't want to be "that guy" that seems to always be on the clock for several hours every round. One IHOF team, RayCo, became referred to as "DelayCo" because its owner always seemed to be that guy.

We've done drafts in 4 days here. Let's get back to that. I remember being 1hr late for my pick and being chasitised for it. I like that better than waiting all day to make my pick

Definately.. I remember for one draft, I had been waiting all day to make my pick from the office, but it just never came to me.. so when I was leaving the office there were two picks ahead of mine, and I really really wanted to my that pick manually (first rounders are special).. I knew I was going to be away from a computer for at least 5 hours, so I wrote that on the board.. knowing full well that I'd be using time if those two picks ahead of me were made..

I felt guilty throughout the evening and ended up using one hour of my "time" for the pick because of being unable to log in. Sure, Jeff gave me some comments, but I felt I deserved it.. I got the comments because I'm one of those who keep nagging about the draft taking so long, but they were deserved in my eyes.

So please.. guys.. if you have no intention on checking in VERY often during the draft, be fair to the others and create lists!

I've said it before, but I'll say it again.. when I ran a hockeyleague, we managed 9 rounds in two days every draft. The first round was ALWAYS held live on IRC, something which I fully understand can't be done here, but every team was forced to have a complete draftlist for the first round in before the draft started which was used as soon as someone wasn't there for the live draft.

Does everyone know that at the end of the preference list, there are selections that say "best available QB", "Best available RB", etc?

I mean if in doubt and you could care less or dont have time. Slap a couple of those puppies in there, trun on the dont pick the same position in consecutive rounds and you are done for the draft

My two cents, just to continue, & for really no reason at all.

The recent delays are not a surprise ... this is just common human behavior where procrastination will follow if an opportunity allows it. Remember "the all nighters to cram for an exam or to write a paper that was due the next day." Procrastination at its best, and acceptable behavior for those participating.

As that wise philospher Aristotle observed,"farts expand to the space in which discharged."

Witness the NFL draft (an all day marathon with 15 minute windows) to the NBA draft (which started in the evening & five minute windows and got to the same place in a few hours).

                  Jibber jabber, sorry.

What hacks me off more than anything else is when players/GMs trade up to get a pick and then take 3-4 hours trying to make a pick or trade out of the pick they just traded for! For crying out loud, why did you trade up if you didn't know who you were going to take?

Jester here (sober at the crack of 1:00 PM).

I'll admit that I went way beyond IFL rant to personal attacks last night. I shouldn't have done that and apologize.

Reason (but not an excuse) being: I had the opportunity to go out with hottie last night and told her (in the afternoon, when the draft was moving) that I had to be around for the draft. As afternoon turned into night with nothing happening for hours on end but my alcohol content increasing one of the results is this thread.

Also, on at least three separate occasions I shut down my PC and said I was done with the IFL but the "feel" that draft picks were being made pulled me back in every time.

                            Do the math.

There's how many hotties? (a lot)

                            There's how many IFL's? (1)

in hindsight I'd go out with her but (perhaps like an ass) if she calls again today I'll tell her the same thing.

Incidentally her cousin called me at 3:41 AM and it appears that I answered the call so finding out how that went should be interesting.
