All right. I'm not totally certain as to what the best way to handle the update is yet. Jim has posted this at the IHOF board:
Because we've already started Staff Hiring, the earliest I think Cringer should update HIS game would be after staff hiring is finished. Right now I'm trying to figure out as to whether and individual would have an advantage should he NOT install the patch after the commissioner does. As for right now, I don't think anyone should install the patch on the computer that they use for the IFL. If you've got the game on another computer it should be all good.Code:As far as individuals in the league using the update, here are the ramifications: 1) You will be able to export rosters that meet the new positional requirements, but not the old ones, without any warning. Not a big deal if you're paying attention. 2) Player salary requests will be different, sometimes quite a bit different, under the new request system. So renegotiations would be different and difficult. Otherwise, there's no reason not to go ahead, no file incompatibility. If you're done renegotiating, there's potentially zero impact. If there are bugs, it's in the salary request stuff. Tried to go through that thoroughly, but there's always something. As for the league, all that matters is what version VPI is using. Personally, I'd wait until that point just before he clicks "end season". I'm using the new version right now, as I have for about a month now. I'm going to go back tonight and do my one renegotation, but from then on, it's 5.1.

It sounds like you will be ad a disadvantage should you NOT update your game, so the patch should be a go sometime fairly soon. I have dispatched an e-mail to Cringer with my recommendations for installing the patch after the 3 staff hring stages are complete. Once again, I would advise everyone to download the update when they get the chance. Just do NOT install the update until you get the official word to do so. More than likely, we will all update on Sunday night.
You may be at a disadvantage should you update your game during these staff hiring stages."Larry Deasoooooooooooooooooon" -- Phil Jenkins

It turns out that Cringer and I are on the same page. Prepare to update after you've made your exports for Staff Hiring, Stage 3, which will be ran on Sunday. If you don't plan on messing with your staffs at all go ahead and update to 5.1. While I'm not 100% sure that we couldn't get away with updating right now I think this is the safest route.

I have a question. If we are in another league and we update to v5.1 for this league but the other league is still using the previous version, would this cause any problems? If so, what is a solution other than running each league on different computers?

I would imagine you could have two installs of the game, each one using one of your licenses.
2003 IFL AC East Runner-Up - Wildcard 10-6
2004 IFL AC East Runner-UP - Wildcard - AC Runner-up 10-5-1
2005 3rd Place AC East 6-10 2007 2nd Place AC East 8-8
2006 3rd Place AC East 7-9 2008 2nd Place AC East 9-7
2009 1st Place AC East, Imperial Bowl Champions 13-3

I don't think doing this is as easy as it sounds, but if you really wanted to try you could do some research on it.Originally posted by WarhammerI would imagine you could have two installs of the game, each one using one of your licenses.
Like Jim said above, you will have to meet the new positional requirements. And if applicable in your other leagues, I'd definitely recommend taking care of all your extensions ASAP before we update.
As should've been expected there are what appear to be some bugs that have come about with 5.1's release. Should these not get corrected by Sunday night I don't know what we are going to do."Larry Deasoooooooooooooooooon" -- Phil Jenkins

( I am copying this from my post at the HFL)Originally posted by WarhammerI would imagine you could have two installs of the game, each one using one of your licenses.
Well first off, I hope Jim is cool with this...(though I don't see why he wouldn't be since I am in alot of FOF 2004 leagues, like 7 I believe)
Anyways, of course all my multiplayer leagues are in different stages of their seasons/offseasons and some are upgrading right away, (most are taking this route) and some are waiting until next season, so I was hesitant to do the upgrade, and I kept thinking/worrying that my exports would be bad, so I thought how do I get around this, keep saying stay as is? I might piss the commisioners off this way, until I had an idea, why not copy the whole fof directory and then rename the file for the second and upgrade that directory? Well it seems to work, on my main directory, it loads up version 5.0 d and my fof20042 folder which is labled Front Office 2004 Upgrade in the programs folder once I upgraded that directory loads up version 5.1.
If this doesn't upset Jim, it might be a way for those of us in my shoes to have the best of both worlds for the other leagues!?
IT takes awhile depending on your computer, mine is two or three years old, but so far it seems to work.
Btw, if your multiplayer directory on the upgraded version is empty, copy from the old main directory and you should be good to go.
Sorry, if this was lengthy and or confusing, but I am not exactly a computer braniac. lol

The problem now is that there is a very serious bug that has been found in 5.1. It specifically deals with free agency in that when a team goes over the cap with an offer, it totally locks free agency (for all teams) and no more offers can be made.
Jim said he is looking into it, but was baffled as to how this could have popped up in the update. We are not going to want to go into free agency without this problem being resolved or at least without having a lot better idea of what is going on with this bug. Hopefully the problem is found very soon and a new patch is released tonight or sometime tomorrow. *fingers crossed*"Larry Deasoooooooooooooooooon" -- Phil Jenkins

Actually, I've recommended to Cringer that everyone should go ahead and update after today's sim . BUT we won't sim the first stage of free agency (which in on Saturday) unless that problem is fixed with another patch. Now that doesn't mean that you can't make an export for Saturday's sim. You should be able to make a good export that will import properly into a new version of FOF (and not worry about the bug).
Best case scenario: Jim releases a new patch later today or tomorrow and we can update to that by Saturday.
I'll let Cringer either verify this or make his own announcement.
Edit: Damn I'm slow.
