  • Head Coaching Changes in 2009

UPDATED reading fodder while we wait for the Season Preview.

Here is our research on HEAD COACHING POSITIONS and who are on the hot seat and who are the candidates that will be hot commodities in the upcoming days. There are eight vacancies and here is how the incumbents stack up. There are two coaches who did not coach in 2008 that are also on our "watch list".

 #1 Nathan Rapaport - Anchorage.
    Age: 53
Observations: A proven winner with outstanding skills.
Prediction: A gift at his current asking price ($2.81). Anchorage cannot afford to lose him. Other clubs will try to steal him away and will succeed if the Lynx don't come up with the bucks.
    :!: LYNX GET THEIR MAN . Resigned for 5 years @ $5.510 M

    #2 T. J. Palmateer - Salt Lake City
    Age: 43
Observations: Youth and a proven winner. Excellent skills.
Predictions: Like Rapaport, the Stallions will try to resign Palmateer at a salary much higher than his $3.19 asking price and if they fall short, Palmateer will go dancing somewhere else.
:!: T.J. DANCES TO HARTFORD & LEAVES SLC. Signed with Hartford for 5 years @ $6.080 M and becomes highest paid coach.

 #3 Sammy Harvey - Boston
    Age: 48
Observations: Lack luster perfromance in Boston. However, he does have a good skill set and he is young.
Prediction: Trivia Bytes believes that Boston is looking to make a major move to go to the next level and will put a bid on either Rapaport or Palmateer. Risky business, if unsuccessful as they might lose the opportunity to resign Harvey. However, Harvey's asking salary of $4.23 may be a factor that keeps him an active candidate in later rounds.
:!: HARVEY"S CONTRACT NOT EXTENDED. Signed by Little Rock for 5 years @ $4.630 M. Boston goes for youth ... see below.

 #4 Kenyon Cash - Cleveland
    Age: 59
Observations: Same skill set as Sammy Harvey (above) but quite a bit older. Has had two playoff appearances.
Prediction: Cleveland cannot be happy with their 2008 season and may feel it is time for a change. The Cleveland Front Office can play conservative and resign Cash ... or they can try to get a coach in the elite class. Cash's asking price of $4.31 may just be the incentive needed for Cleveland to roll the dice.
    :!: CASH REMAINS IN CLEVELAND. Resigned for 3 years @ $5.910 M.

 #5 Donnell Mills - Hartford
    Age: 57
Observations: Long ties to the organization and a good mix of skills.
Prediction: A little overpriced at $4.790 but the Grizzlies have been very loyal to the only coach in their history. This may be the year that Hartford tests the market and still feel comfortable that Mills will be there if those effort do not pan out.
:!: MILLS LET GO AT HARTFORD . Mills lands in Portland for 5 years @ $5.74 M.

 #6 Kent Silvanic - Dakota
    Age: 51
    Observations: Lack luster performance.
Prediction: Should be gone but may show up elsewhere with a new start.
    :!: STATUS QUO - SILVANIC STAYS. Resignd for 3 years @ $4.500 M

 #7 Chris Kelly - Little Rock
    Age: 68
Observations: Great lineage. Past Coach of the Year. So what's the problem? The Medicare coach of the IFL has limited value to any team outside of the Toads since it will result in two head coaches in a very short period of time.
Prediction: Kelly's asking price of $3.03 may be very attractive to a team that wants to make a statement for a season or two. Little Rock knows that they will need to make a change soon. The question is whether they wait for Kelly to make that decision for them (the 2008 season that followed a 2007 Imperial Bowl win should give them some food for thought) or whether they are proactive and start reshaping new leadership now. Our bet is that the Toads will take a shot to get Rapaport or Palmateer.
:!: TOADS GIVE KELLY THE BOOT. Kelly signs with California for 3 years or until he dies, whichever comes first @ $3.030 M.

 #8 Reuben Allan - Portland
    Age: 63
Observations: Can you see Jeff resigning a coach that has a FAIR rating for Offensive Play Calling?
Prediction: Allan will not be involved with the Portland organization a day longer. His age may be enough to prompt a move closer to retirement.
:!: UNEMPLOYED. Allan blames Trivia Bytes.

Amos Harrigan - possible rookie coach, available.
:!: HARRIGAN LANDS FIRST JOB WITH BOSTON. Signed for 5 years @ $3.500 M.

:?: Rico Flannery - possible veteran coach who sat out last season, available.
:!: FLANNERY COMES OUT OF RETIREMENT: HEADS TO SLC. Signed for 5 years @ $3.600 M.

See the first post in this thread which has been updated. Provided to those who need a "fix" for reading material and are a suffering withdrawal pains because the Season Previes is not yet out.
