Ok, so you guys killed the site. That surprised me, sorry about the confusion and delay that resulted from it. We have never come that close to the 10 gig bandwidth mark. I think the closest we came was 8 gigs or so.

As far as getting a site with more bandwidth (Jave), I don't think we need it. We don't get up there much, and next offseason I will watch it closely. One reason I have come to like this host is because they have great service. I emailed them Friday morning and in literally 10 minutes or so I had an email back saying they would give us an extra gig to get through the day. An extra gig I had not asked for, and they did not charge for. And they were fast about it.

Any statistics available to see what caused the sudden surge? My webhost has a bunch of tools for checking popular pages etc.

Overall it just looks like higher activity from guys. Stupid googlebots may have played a small role, but looking at details I don't really think it did much.

The host has actually kept all our stats for us, even when the original host was sold, and with the server change. That was a nice surprise. So comparing it to last off-season, which was October...

      Code:
Hits Files Pages Visits Sites KBytes Visits Pages Files Hits

      Mar 2006 26002 10186 1745 279 2320 9253327 8652 54117 315770 806076
      Oct 2005 21677 6855 1407 206 1642 4897810 6414 43628 212508 671991
A little off on the way things are lined up there, but that shows 3500 more file hits per day, over 4000 more page hits per day, 70 more visits per day, For the month, 11000 more page hits, 100000 more file hits, and 135000 more hits overall....something like that.

Looking at the months in details, the first few days of te draft ar eboth the biggest days of the month. But this time around things just kept nearly as strong for about a week and a half as far as activity.

Canada being low is odd. We have two Canadians, and though Cydney maynot be on a lot Matt is, so I wonder if Matt comes across as Newtork, or Unknown most of the time.

ahhhhh, yeah ok my assumption was a little wrong about the googlebots. They did have something to do with this.

Comparing March with October of '05, our activity increased by over 1 gig of bandwidth. Googlebots(and the like) increased by 2 gigs. I have started banning the IPs for them by the way, I started adding a couple a week or two ago. Just added a couple more.

Still, March was a record month for us even taking away the googlebots.

That's frustrating, bots taking 20% of your bandwidth... (you had 10 gigs, right?)

I don't quite understand how google-bots could use that much bandwidth though, or perhaps you're not referring to Google's spiders?

googlebots, google spiders....same thing to me.

Anyways, I think I have found a way to tell them to go away. Putting a robot.txt file into te root directory. They read it and it tells them not to go into certian areas. I just need to find out if I put it in the root root, or the public html root area.

No, I understand what you meant, I was just shocked at how much bandwidth they're using.

Yeah me too. I didn't think it was that much looking at the first set of website stats. But another stat thing I can look at has an actual break down between normal users and bots/spiders. Atleast we beat he bots/spiders.
