    Draft Times

We will go ahead and take Jeff's last proposal, since a couple guys liked it and no one objected.

Draft Clock: runs from 6am central to 12 am central

    Time Limits:
    1st Round - 5 hours
    2nd Round - 5 hours
    3rd Round - 3 hours
    4th Round - 3 hours
    5th Round - 2 hours
    6th Round - 1 hour
    7th Round - 1 hour

If you miss a pick, your clock for the rest of your picks will be affected. For example, if you miss your pick in the 1st round the amount of time you have for your future picks will slide. You would then have 3 hours to make your 2nd round pick, 2 hours to make your 3rd and 4ths, and 1 hour to make your 5th, 6th, and 7th picks.

I'm think this would be able to be implemented by VPI, though mods might have to tinker with some things manually.

The biggest problem for some may be Late FA. I have it down to two stages only. If there is a big demand I will make it three, butI don't see much need for it since there is plenty of time to sign guys before the regular season starts.

Basically this gets everything done in one month and we are onto the regular season at the begining of April. Let me know what you think I guess.

The only breaks are going to be after the Staff Hiring stages, a one day break which I need to have in there so I can be home to import the draft. The other possible break would be after Early FA. It is marked as Finish Draft if needed. If the draft is done before then, then the files that begin Late FA could be put out the day before leaving this day open.

        Update:

If Albuquerque makes it to the Imperial Bowl then that game will be delayed until the following Tuesday. We would then squeeze in the Staff Hiring stages from Wed-Fri. This is because hawkster will be out on military duty (or doing whores, he wasn't real clear) and wouldn't be able to get an export in for the game. I don't want to screw over anyone when it comes to a possible championship.

          How is the draft done?

Is it an email or live draft?

Draft is done by the Draft-O-Matic draft utility that VPI97 (IHOF/GEFL commish) lets us use. You can set up player lists in it and have it turned on so it will automatically pick for you incase you may be away when your pick comes up. You can also control your trading of draft picks in it, so you don't have to worry about having a mod change any picks you trade away during the draft.

The draft moves fairly fast this way, compared to other ways. We are able to finish the draft in 5 days or less our two times using it.

Might sound strange coming from me, but I think we should consider slowing down the draft a little. I'm mainly thinking of some of the guys who have had problems with our current system in the past.

Aiming for six days seems like overkill. I know we've gotten it done that fast in the past, but maybe it's time to look back and ask if everyone is really happy with the current system.

Edit: I'm thinking that aiming for 9-10 days would be a little more reasonable.

In talking with Suicane I know one thing we both agreed on is that there were points in the draft last year where the speed didn't seem to ever be fast enough for some guys. Things like, "We didn't even get a round done today" were being spouted when maybe that shouldn't exactly be a goal during the first few rounds of the draft.

Again, it probably sounds weird coming from me, since I was a big stickler in the 1st couple of drafts. Just want to make sure that guys with other lifestyles than mine are happy with the system and will be able to remain in the league for the longhaul. I know we lost two owners at the very end of the 2005 season, most likely due to our offseason pace.

Suggestion for days made available? Length of time limits?

It is all up for discussion and I think I will force myself to be more willing to make changes this year. I will try...I will try to try. I want to try to try.

I'd also ask that we break up late free agency into 3 parts instead of 2 if possible. Like:

                      1-2
                      3-4
                      5-8

We all know how much guys like those undrafted free agents.

That's how we had it last year.

I will work up an alternate schedule and see how that looks. This will add an extra week before we get to Week 1 of the regular season but I said I would try...this is me trying. I will suck it up.

                          Time limits last year were:

                          3 hrs for rounds 1 and 2. 2 hours for round 3. 1 hour for rounds 4-7.

One thing that I think could be changed for sure is the draft clock. That could speed things up a little. Last year it was 0900 AM CT to 2300. I don't see why that couldn't start at 0600 AM. I know that could affect guys in the west coast, but then again the draft stops at 9pm for them as well. If your pick looks like it could come up in the morning, make a short list.

The only problem with the current 'fast' draft is that it's not fast enough, imo.

When you have 2-3 hour picks, and you're online waiting to do something in real life because you're a few picks away, but you may trade the pick if your guy is gone, that little wait can be upwards of 4-6 hours if people ahead of you use up their full time. So then you can't wait any longer, you end up submitting a list and grabbing a guy you really didn't want.

So i'd rather have the draft either speed up, or slow down more. It's weird wanting something in completely opposite directions, but basically i'm saying is if we have a fast draft, it should be real fast like NFL 15-30 mins per pick tops. That's not very realistic in an online league because unlike the NFL, we're not getting paid for this, so people won't skip work and stuff for an online draft.

If we slow it down, we should really slow it down at least for the first 2 rounds, so people can get the more important rounds done right. If they want to trade a pick, they can. If they want to really review the draft class when they're up, they can. I just don't like the idea of submitting lists for the important first two rounds is all.

So because the faster draft isn't really possible, i'd have to agree with Jeff that slowing it down (at least the first 2 rounds) may be a better option.
