Contract question

Right now all I see is negotiate contracts when I click on one of my players.

It shows me his current salary and then it shows me what I can change it to this season and for the upcoming seasons. What if I just want to offer an extension and not change his curent salary? If I change his current salary to zero and fill in the amount for 2007, 2008, etc, will the game treat it as an extension or will my player think I want him to play this season for free?

Do I have to wait to the offseason to offer a "straight" extension?

When you offer an extension the old current salary isn't equated into the new deal, so you have to offer him at least the minimum.

Edit: To clarify, whatever current sal you give him in the extension is what it will be for the rest of the year. Only the bonus from the old contract is carried through.
