It's my opinion that holdouts are directly related to you team cohesion. I think it goes deeper then that though. I believe that Jim has a "loyalty" rating in the game somewhere that affects a few more things. Wins/losses, being directly related to the team cohesion. The longer your team plays together, the better they play regardless of a players direct abilities. I realize this is not news, has it's in the games help file, but I dont think owners give this the attention it's deserved.
For instance:
This years, 2005, All-League First Team Guard:

Stud, no dought about it, and deserving of the award. Lets take a look at his stats:

Again, very impressive.
Now lets take a look at one of my guys:

Ummm, not so impressive. Lets see his stats:

Well, those are enlighting! I won't get into the fact Barnes recieved exactly ZERO awards for his play, I will save that for another article. However, I believe it supports my theory about the cohesion at work.
Another theory is that cohesion is directly related to your loyalty to your players. For instance, I believe Kurt Bice is grossly underpaid, however, he did not hold out. Why?
Since the this league began, I have done my best to show my players loyalty. I have keep the majority of my players, and been extremely fair when renogicating contracts. I very rarley cut players, and aside from the 2 blockbuster trades, I have done very little trading as well.
I see some teams moving 10+ players a year, and consistently doing numerous little trades for 6th and 7th round picks for so and so players quite often.
I believe that Jim instituted a point system that keeps track of all of these little trades, and offseason moves, as well has cutting players. Each time you move players, this reduces your "loyalty" rating, and when the rating reaches a certain %, this begans to effect, the number of years players are willing to sign with you, the chance of picking up free agents, and third, holdouts!
This is all speculation, however, watching this league unfold since the beginning, these are some of the things I am noticing.
