The Horsetooth Ogres have signed 8-year veteran defensive tackle Brant Webster to a 3-year, $11.99M contract, continuing their push to fortify the interior defensive line with reliable, assignment-sound players. Webster brings excellent run-stopping ability and has long been known as a dependable rotational presence who helps stabilize defensive fronts. While not a pass-rushing specialist, his strength at the point of attack and his discipline make him an ideal early-down contributor in the Ogres’ scheme.
Coaches also value Webster’s impact on special teams, where he has consistently graded out as an above-average performer throughout his career. With the Ogres’ renewed commitment to fundamentals and depth, Webster fits perfectly as a steady veteran who can hold the line and support multiple phases of the game.
A solid, no-nonsense addition as Horsetooth continues rebuilding its defense with toughness and experience
The Horsetooth Ogres have added experience and toughness to the back end of their defense, signing 7-year veteran defensive back Mel Smistad to a 3-year, $12.99M contract.
Smistad arrives as an excellent run defender, one of the better tacklers available in free agency, and the Ogres wasted no time identifying where he fits. Despite spending his career at cornerback, Smistad will be transitioned to free safety, where his physicality and instincts against the run are expected to translate immediately.
While he isn’t a ballhawk, his reliability, sure tackling, and willingness to step downhill make him a natural fit for the Ogres’ hybrid coverage looks that require safeties to support the run and keep things clean over the top.
Smistad projects as a steady veteran presence who can help stabilize a secondary in transition and bring a tougher edge to the middle of the field.
A smart positional conversion and a stabilizing addition for a defense still under reconstruction.
