  • Is this cheese?

I am involved in a league that moves quickly and has injuries turned off. One player in the league is 11-0 on the season so far, and has a great team. The reason he can afford such a great team is he has capped out the contracts the past couple of years. As such, he is already $35 million over next season's projected cap.

    Two questions:
    1) With the lack of injuries in the league, do you think that this strategy has enough downside to it to keep everyone from doing it?
    2) With the way owners come and go in these online leagues, is it fair to leave a potentially devestating cap situation, with the current GM knowing he can just pick up and walk away if the situation turns bad?

(If you are in this league, please don't discuss it there. I don't want to call this guy out, I am just worried about the integrity of the league.)

lack of injuries sounds like a suspicious league setup. Injuries=the greatest equalizer over roster talent. Without it, why have backups? And since going over the cap, he realizes as such--just paid the superstars and let the game decide on the scrubs week in and week out when he has cap problems and can't afford the full 53 man roster next season. 3rd rd pick sounds like a small price to pay unless your league commish has out of the game penalties for going over the cap.

cheese, not really. Just exploiting or taking advantage of the sketchy league rules.

If I have confidence in an owner being around, I might let him get away with this. That just creates another problem though, in the fact I may piss a guy off by cracking down on him and not someone else I am more confident in sticking around to rebuild the team.

We have not gotten into a situation like this yet, but I am sure we will in a season, or most likely two. It is a hard call.

I think overall, it is bad for the league and we watch the cap. sovstar sees all alot of the time, that is why he is such an excellent guy to have help run this league. He also worries about these things a little more then I do, and will bring them to my attention usually a little sooner then most. I hope this continues, along with my own awareness of guys' caps, to prevent this.

To answer the main question, yes I think it is somewhat bad for a league. Guys get into cap trouble though, and I hope we do not have this extreme of a case, even though I have seen guys get out of it in other leagues.

My opinion is that capping out guys is part of the game. I really dislike the idea of putting rules in place to keep people from doing this, if you dont want an owner who wont be around when things are bad than he shouldnt be here to begin with. I see nothing wrong with it.

The league runs an entire 16 game season in three days, so it is impossible to have injuries. Of course, this lets me feel more comfortable with giving higher bonuses, but on the other hand I don't want the pendulum to swing so far in that direction that it doesn't resemble real football GMing anymore.

I'm generally of that opinion in a normal league. (Except I do not think the in-game penalties are harsh enough for a team over the cap during the current season) But I'm just wondering if the no injuries thing makes this strategy TOO viable.

I guess I'll wait and see what happens to his team in the offseason, which will be next week.

FWIW Im probably going to drop "the other league" because of these types of issues. Without injuries backups/depth is meaningless and that is a big part of the cap and of football. I have really struggled with this and havent quite come to grips yet.
