  • Whales Can't Overcome Colella's Three INTs

The Vancouver Killer Whales entered todays game riding a three game winning streak and were tied with Reno for the best record in the NC West. The team didn't seem too worried about the 2-5 Texas Hell Riders but they must have been looking forward to next week's game against the Wolfpack, as the Pack downed the Whales 24-21.

The Whales jumped out to an early 7-0 lead with a quick five play, 51-yd drive that was capped off by a by a 6-yd TD pass to Willard Carmichael. QB Clayton Chung wasn't about to be overshadowed leading his team to a countering TD, tying the game at 7-7. K Scotty Lally would add a 37-yd FG in the closing minutes of the first quarter to give the Whales a 10-7 lead after one quarter of play. Texas would put together two scoring drives in the 2nd quarter of 65 & 69-yards. Chung scored on a 4-yd run and threw a 7-yd TD pass to Shane Smith, as the Hell Riders dominated the 2nd quarter, holding Vancouver to a FG attempt (Lally missed wide right). Chung and the Hell Riders ended the half up 21-10 on the 1st place team in the NC West.

When the 3rd quarter of play began, there was a sense that the Killer Whales defense had taken a tongue lashing at halftime and were ready to play in the second half. The defense came out and held Texas, making them punt twice. The Whales defense also recovered a fumble. The play of the defense was all for not, as QB Dennis Colella would throw 3 INTs in a span of 5:42. The Hell Riders would be held to just three points in the second half on a Jesse Tamaarkin 19-yd FG. Colella and the offense finally found the endzone with 3:31 left in the game after an 88-yd drive ended with RB Allan Ho going over the top of the line for a 2-yd TD run. The Whales elected to kickoff, even will no timeouts, but the defense was too tired and Texas just ran out the clock.
