With Madison's stadium being rented out the first 5 weeks of the season by the Special Olympics. Madison has had too endure a tough 4 game road trip to start the season.
After splitting the first two games of this road trip with a loss in Pittsburgh and a win in Murfreesboro the Demons ventured to Reno hoping to climb above .500 heading into their bye week.
Reno jumped on the Demons quick in this matchup. On their first possession the Wolfpack marched down field but had to settle for a Lanny Quiles 49 yard FG. After a missed Paul Pickett 54 yard FG the Wolfpack wasted no time and gave the ball to their standout RB Jacques Crosby who rumbled 56 yards to put the Wolfpack up 10-0.
On the ensuing kickoff the Demons were flagged for a hold which put them back on their own 7 yard line. Coach Vince Lovett pulled QB Johnie Loving to the side and said, "Make something happen out there but dont turn the fucking ball over, we need some points". On the very first play from scrimmage Loving hit WR Troy Wells on a 29 yard post. Wells gave a stiff arm to the safety and was gone for a 93 yard TD. Madison was back in the game.
Late in the 2nd quarter with score 17-14 Johnie Loving took the snap and was pounded by DE Oscar Toney and fumbled the ball. Damian Torre of the Wolfpack picked up the ball and scored on a 8 yard fumble return. The Demons went into halftime down 24-14.
Both teams had trouble getting anything going in the 3rd quarter as the Wolfpack were the only team to put anything on the board. A Lanny Quiles 30 yd. FG put the Wolfpack up 27-14.
In the 4th quarter is when Johnie Loving stepped up his game. He rallied the troops and his arm was the reason. Cody Reyes plunged in from the 1 yard line for his second TD of the game to bring the score to 27-21 with 7:00 left in the game.
Reno ran the ball the best they could to take time off the clock and they took almost 5 minutes off the clock. They were left with a big decision with 2:17 left though, attempt a 56 yard FG to win the game or punt the ball and let their defense stop Madison who had to score a TD. They decided to try the FG and go for the win. This choice may have cost them the game as the kick was short of the crossbar. Madison had life with 2:17 to go in the game and the ball on the Madison 46 yard line.
Johnie Loving didnt need but :20 to find Randy Sparrow for a 38 yard TD. Madison had the lead for the first time all game with under 1:57 left. The Madison bench was fired up and the crowd was silent. They could not believe their eyes. Reno never got close and the game ended.
