After a dismal 2017 season Phantom Phans naturally looked toward the off-season for salvation. Well, we're now through 4 Rounds of the annual IFL Amatuer Draft and we're still waiting.
So we're sitting with the Big Chief for some answers!!!
SW: Jester Blaze, first question: WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON!?!?!?
JB: HaHa. Spark, I can see where a Phan would be frustrated. Hell, we're all frustrated. But frustration doesn't make everything better.
We don't know what we're going right now. I know fans had high expectations of immediate gratification with the #12 pick but teams who don't know what they're doing piss away #12 picks and all their glory. I felt it more prudent to accept Dakota's offer, take this year to evaluate things with (hopefully) The RZAc back for a full season, then take a look at things again next off-season with some serious fire-power.
SW: You seem to be in a lot of talks with the Spirit this off-season. Any particular reason for that?
JB: Well there's never gonna be talk where a deal wouldn't make sense so the pieces have to be there but die-hard fans might remember that during our bye week of the 2016 season some of us flew to Dakota for the Spirit/Mountaineer game and the last Stanfield vs. Sepelveda showdown. We arrived with decent tickets, which were donated last minute to the Dakota YMCA when Dakota George personally greeted us and invited us all to box seats! Our players and personnel mingled and as a result we now get a lot of input on potential deals with the Spirit which allow us to gauge a certain amount of after-effects beforehand.
SW: So will we be seeing some new Phantoms at the end of the draft?
JB: We're just gonna continue getting best value for our picks. That might be an amateur player or it might be other picks. The real thing to focus on is that Roderick Amos and the RZAc are back and we've got an exciting young guy in Dwayne Hernandez at SS. There's no reason to believe 2018 will be a repeat of 2017 and that's something to get pumped about!
SW: Of those who haven't pussyfooted, who's had the best draft?
JB: Wichita. Ouellette is going to be that good! Orlando is having a hell of a draft, and can't be faulted for trading the 1.1 since they have their QB already, but even all the pieces they've acquired can't add up to a true franchise QB. Ouellette pays off for 13 or so years...
