  • "Take the monkey off my back!!!"

    by Spark Wonup
    Lawrence Eagle Tribune

Drunken Phans who couldn't get a ticket to the actual game, physically weary after watching the longest Imperial Bowl in history but still standing emotionally, rejoiced like school kids today in Broke as Fuck Field in the moments following the game as blurbs from Peter Gabriel's "Shock the Monkey" bellowed from the stadium speakers inciting them to chant along and clips of Steve Young's post-game antics during the NFL's Super Bowl XIX looped on the monitors in time with the musical segments.

The Phantoms, once a team trying desperately to crack the playoff ice, had become nationally known these past two seasons. Nationally known for one thing: losing almost solely when it mattered most. They headed into the game against the league's blue-print for getting it done, the Norfolk Vipers, and the reality of the situation wasn't lost on the team.

"We tried to head into the game with a certain swagger," said defensive captain R.J. Kley "but we never truly seemed to have it. There was a foreboding sense that it was gonna happen again. You know what I'm saying?"

Although saving it for the end, Harold Lozier and the Viper organization did indeed see that it happened. Again and again but this time the Phantoms responded in turn, with a little help from a perfectly timed gust of wind in OT to ward off a 39 yard Dave Harbour FG, and for the first time in the organization's history hoist the IFL Trophy at the end of the season.

"It's been tough," thought back owner/GM Jester Blaze at the mid-field stage following the game. "Post-season expectations were huge the past two seasons and the finality of both losses was devastating. We almost went through it this season again against Texas."

"But that didn't happen and now the monkey's been lifted!" he started saying and ended yelling as he lifted the Trophy for the Phantom Phans to see again. "This just gives more evidence to what I've been saying all along and should encourage all IFL teams to do whatever it takes to make the post-season. Once there you do your best and hope for luck... and we got a lot of that this post-season."

Bucky Beaver, a fan favorite, chose not to even approach the celebration going on onstage after the game and instead could be seen traversing the stadium seats with the Phans.
