  • Stanfield/Hamilton lives up to hype!!

    Lawrence Sun Times

The Oakland Devils came to Broke As Fuck Field today riding a 2-game road playoff winning streak. They've shown the ability to do whatever is necessary to get the "W". But would all that change against the seemingly unstoppable Phantoms?

The NFC Championship started off with a bang as Manuel Sherlock returned Dave Jordan's opening kickoff 79 yards to the Oakland 23 yard line! Six plays later the Phantoms were up 7-0 and their was already an air of confidence rolling through the home crowd.

However the Phantoms next possession lasted all of 1 play and netted Oakland 2 points off a safety via holding in the endzone. Alas, the Football Gods will not say who was responsible for the hold and the players are mum on the subject. Lawrence's offense would stall on the next few possessions but Oakland QB Gene Hamilton was just warming up as he led the Devils to bring the lead to 7-5 when Jordan booted a 38 yard figgie and then to a 12-7 Oakland lead after tossing a 29 yard pass to Tessier and putting quite a scare into the Phantom Phaithful.

Lawrence hadn't been down in a while and Hamilton was looking unstoppable.

But this was to be the Stanfield/Hamilton showdown, not one man's spotlight. With a lot of help from Phirst-Year-Phantom Bucky Beaver, who started off the very next drive with a 53 yard burst from scrimmage, Stanfield was able to command the offense to end the 1st half with 3 straight scores while the defense held Hamilton and the Devils from scoring. That 7-12 deficit was now a 20-12 lead and the Phans could breath a sigh of relief as they headed to the concession stands to help facilitate the teams finances.

The Devils received the ball to start the 3rd quarter and their offense headed to the field down both starting offensive tackles and it didn't look good. Hamilton scoffed at the set back and after a few handoffs tossed a 56 yard bomb to Ernest Martinez which Rico Bailey followed with a powerful 2 point conversion and Oakland had tied the game at 20!

On the ensuing possession Tobias Stanfield answered quickly with a 50 yard strike to Dana Glover, who's having a rookie season to dream about, and the stadium erupted! Not a team known to quit, Oakland showed the kind of resolve that won them two playoff games so far by shaking off the Lawrence TD and working their way down to the Phantom 2 yard line when they lost their third OT of the game and were overcome by the likes of Eldon Munford and Edmund Peacock and had to settle for a 20 yard FG.

The Devils had all the chance in the world going into the 4th quarter down only 27-23 but Tobias Stanfield showed that he would not be denied a trip to the Big Dance as he led the Phantom offense on two consecutive TD drives to start the final period that took over 10 minutes off the clock and all but sealed the victory.

In the end Hamilton/Stanfield lived up to the hype as they both combined for 638 yards and a 7-0 TD-INT ratio (Hamilton: 323 3-0, Stanfield: 315 4-0). Rarely does one get to witness such QB play in the same game. They shared the wealth as there were three 100 yard receivers in the game (Martinez - 142, Caylor - 110, Glover - 108) and a 4th missed the century mark by 2 yards. All total 6 different receivers scored TDs led by ROY candidate Dana GLover's 2.

Bucky Beaver showed that the Phantom offense is multi-faceted as he tore up the Oakland run defense for 153 rushing yards highlighted by the 53 yarder in the 2nd.

Was there any defense in this game? Well household names Ken "Tank" Allmon and R.J. "The Leash" Kley recorded 11 tackles each and Eldon Munford recorded 2 sacks but other than that the answer would basically be "no".
