I am proud to announce that as of today June, 21st 2004, the Lawrence Phantoms have installed the required Imperial Football League software and await acceptance by the Comissioner's Office. Since there is no reason to believe said request will be denied we now turn our focus to the initial league draft....
The initial draft order has been released recently by the league office and although we take nothing for granted, including promises of a specific draft order, we shall assume the draft to run as scheduled and plan accordingly. The current schedule has us picking at #8 overall. While we'd like to have been much lower in the round (I'm personally of the mindset that two great/excellent players early in the draft is better than one stud and one good/great player) we've perused the draft board and there is no denying the fact we'll have our choice of plenty of talent when our first pick comes up.
I'll be trying to draft a balanced team however there's no hiding the fact that my heart lies with a great defense. It'll be tough to look at an offensive position with the team's first overall pick but when the time comes we'll do what must be done. One thing that will be sure to effect our decision will be the Burlington Locomotives' selection at #6. Conventional wisdom is that you must first focus on winning your division, and only then on the playoffs. To that end we'll be watching their pick closely. They're the only NFC East team picking ahead of us and could easily set the tone of our division.
So far the only other human owned team in the NFC East is the Orlando Pirates. They just happen to be picking at #30, the exact selection I feel is the best in a flip-flop draft. I anticipate Jason getting great value with both his first picks and jumping to a slight early advantage in the draft but plan on burning the midnight oil (and a lot of trees) for as long as the draft lasts Sunday and hopefully can reclaim the lost ground by night's end.
