Herzog shined on as a starter in '05. He'll look to build upon that this season. Herzog played well along side wily veterans Morgan Hare, Gerard Weidner, and Amos Hassler and as promised the defense was much improved. In fact, the Stallions only allowed 266 points last season and set a team record for points allowed giving up only 16.6 ppg (while scoring 25+ ppg).
New defensive coordinator Steve Barber will look to improve on that strong play by moving to a 4-3 this season. Barber handled the offense well in his two seasons but was often criticized for his lack of consistency with the unit. His defensive coaching is actually better and he’s great with young talent---which he’ll likely have a lot of as the Stallions will once again stock the defensive unit in the IFL draft.
The new look defense will allow SLC to bring pressure on every down and it ensures its best players are on the field at all times. Burke may be gone but I expect his handiwork to bear fruit this season as his players embrace and execute his system--JS
